Stuck need help
 

In an effort to figure out some suspension issues my mechanic has been changing wheels and tires with loaners.

The last sett he put on had very little tread and my wife went tooling around and wore them through to the metal cord.

I might be able to get my hands on a couple of used tires this evening, but no acces to tire changing equipment. (being that I am taking the car in Monday I don't want to buy new tires and give them to him)

Would it be reasonalble for me to try and change the tires by hand?

LOL... yes,,,, you can do that by hand.. it is the little tires that are killers.. like sube 13inchers... no extra rubber to stretch over the rim....
See if you can tell which side of the rim has the smaller diameter.. and take them off and put them on from that side... also match up the tires so you go on with the big hole first....I assume you are going to use two tire irons... very recommended.... like the understatement of the day....

I couldn't even break the bead off the old one.

Is that tire SMARTER than you ?
 

I did not say it was easy.... you have given up already ?

Take the valve core out.. and put it next to the curb and back another vehicle up onto one side... may have to do it on two sides....

Changing your own tires? Jeeze, that's taking DIY a lttle too far.
 

If you have access to another car, and insist on doing this swap, load your wheels and tires in the trunk, and find a good ole' fashioned service station. Pay $5-10/wheel to have their machine do it.

Don't forget, you're going to have to have them balanced too.

Gad! I used to watch my dad break tires off and on at home all the time when I was a kid. He'd lay the sucker flat on the ground and drive the car over the tire itself to break the bead. Then rotate the tire a bit, drive over it again, and again, until the bead was broke all the way around. Then use a couple LARGE pry bars and pry it off the rim. Putting a tire on was a real work out involving the same pry bars and a very large hammer. :eek:
No thanks! I'll let the tire shop do it. I'm not the grizzly 'ol farm boy that he was ;)

In this day and age there are not many MANLY pursuits which compare to tackling changing a tire by hand..... there is real satisfaction when you are through. Much like doing a paint job yourself....It can also classify as a survival skill if one carries a tire patch in the trunk.

But you have to be smart in choosing your opponent.. ( no small tires ) and as Dirty Harry said.... " A man's got to know his limitations"...:D

Years ago we had to break a bead on a tire with out tools we just used another car to drive along the edge of the tire worked like a charm
