Possible 1978 300SD buyer, need guidance.
I have a line on a 1978 300SD, with a claimed 176k miles. The back seat is torn, it is light blue in color with a straight body but faded paint.
The thing is, the engine currently has the injectors off, because the PO is apparently trying to fix a mysterious engine 'knock'. Now, I understand that a diesel knocks, I'm assuming this man understands that. He seemed uncertain whether I could drive the car home or not. I'm not even sure if the car has working A/C, or how much if any of the accessories work. Thing is, I can get the car for $500 OBO, probably about $350. I am not a man of means, but this deal seemed almost too good to be true. I'm mechanically inclined, have worked on Toyota trucks and diesel semis (Frieghtliners during MB ownership matter of fact, Detroit Diesel though...), on a shadetree basis. Is this something I want to get into? For instance, what would it cost to replace the motor in this car? Can you give me some idea of an initial cost to make something like this roadworthy? Please accept my apologies for this abrupt post requesting detailed information that might only require a search. This issue is somewhat time critical, and my post isn't meant to be disrespectful to your board. Thank you! |

Rusted,
Which motor do you want to replace: Starter motor, AC/heat blower motor, power window motor, sun roof motor? Have to know before someone here can quote a price. P E H |

Rusted:
Welcome to the forum. As far as the knock I would question if the current owner really knows what the knock is. I learned from my friends on the forum of a new term called nailing, which my 79 300SD had experienced after being put into service after sitting 2 years. I ended up rebuilding the injectors myself and then having them calibrated at an injection shop. The injectors were partially plugged which can cause nailing. As far as the engine you might want to do searches on engines, but the last time I saw a short block it was about 4 to 6K on Adsit. I bought my car not running and ended up rebuilding the injection pump myself. Parts were about $75.00 including some great Bosch books I purchased, but sweat equity very high. I can't speak for everybody, but it depends how much your willing to do yourself. As seen on the forum a compression test will tell you a lot about the engine as far as wear etc. Do some searches on your items of concern. You will find a wealth of information on this forum from some incredibly talented individuals. PeterG 79 300 SD |
