Need 300 SD Transmission Advice

I was wondering if anyone has tried to rebuild there own transmission? I cant justify putting alot of money into the car because of the body. I did a chrysler tranny back in the 80s and found it not to be that bad. I rebuilt my transfer case on my jeep a couple of years ago. The kits are pretty cheap. $150.00 and includes all the seals, clutch packs, and gaskets. I just want to know if there is other things that wear excessively or break. The car is fine going forward except it somtimes does not downshift. you pull out from a light or stopsign, and then all of a sudden the engine races a little, and someone thinks you did a neutral drop, because the wheels breaks loose . Reverse is terrible, I am lucky to be able to back over a 4" eek:

Get a rebuilt tranny, it's not like a Torqueflite, alas.

By the time the 722.x is failing to shift properly, it has worn out thrust washers on the planetary sets, worn clutch packs that must be un-rinveted to work on (internal seals gone), frictions and steels shot, usually has some issues with the valve body, and probably some other parts worn out, too (overrunning clutches and bearing races, maybe drums).

I've seen a couple of tranny books on eBay, but rebuilding these things isn't something one can do in the garage, you need measuring and assembly tools that are rather uncommon. Most tranny shops have terrible problems with them, usually never manage to get them to shift properly, and some places can't get them to run at all.

I don't suppose it's impossible, but by the time you get the tools, replace all the stuff that is worn, take the clutches apart and re-rivet, you will have spent more than what a rebuild costs.

what year is your car?? i may have a good used one that will work, i will sell it worth the money, email me. i have rebuilt a few mbz tranys, they are not that bad, but my shop is fully equiped. it is possible for you to do it, but im sure a good used one would be much cheaper. my parts bills alone will run $1200. good luck with it.
