hood pad won't stick...
 

I cleaned the old stuff off really well, used 3m adhesive remover and scraped. I used 3m adhesive spray and sprayed both the hood and the pad and let them become tacky for a couple of minutes.

I thought that I had it tucked into the corners well, but after a couple of weeks in the heat it starts to sag and come down at the corners...and pretty soon it's off altogether.

what am i doing wrong?

What is the part number on the 3M spray you used ?

I did the same thing...prep, prep, prep...carefully spray adhesive in all the right places and the damned thing still fell down. Pooh!

I eventually gave up and switched to what I call a "Tool of Last Resort"; I used "yellow death" — 3M Weatherstrip Adhesive (http://www.premiumautocare.com/3msupweatad0.html)

That pad hasn't fallen down since.

That is a huge area to try to spread the yellow death... from a tube... perhaps both of you used the wrong 3M spray contact cement....

I didn't try to spread all over the underside of the hood.

I just put the yellow death around the perimeter, along the hood stiffners and in a few hand-sized spots in the middle of the large open areas.

I originally used 3M Super 77 spray adhesive (I believe that this is the one Performance Products recommends) on the hood pad ...it is an excellent spray adhesive but IMHO regardless of what they say, in this application it is taxed far beyond it's capabilities.

...what or if 3M recommends anything for MBZ (or aftermarket) hood pads.

What I do know is this:
1) I've sometimes had troubles with adhesives when they are being used like this so I decided to order and use the spray stickum that Peformance recommended

2) It was purchased at the same time that I bought Lilly's hood pad

2) When I installed that hood pad, it was done in accordance with both the hood pad and adhesive manufacturers directions

4) An almost empty spray can of 3M Super Adhesive out in my spray stickum inventory has a SKU# sicker on it from Performance Products.

5) It didn't work for squat.

6) I used yellow death and it did work.

8090 isn't what I have. Mine is 3M Super 77....which, I guess, explains a lot now.

Whyintheheck would PP ship this stuff instead of 8090? Why is the sky blue? I don't know...or care.

I know I used yellow death and it worked. At this point I'm all for making it work and going on the next issue....ya know, sometimes the ends justify the means, particularly so in the realm of hood pads.

Don't you have some painting to do?

You know darned well I have painting I need to do... but in case someone else wants to use the one 3M suggests for their hood pad... and spray the entire area , which is normal for contact cements, then they might want to be aware of the two similar looking cans which might be available at their local auto parts store...
I am not asking you to take yours apart.. unless you really want to......but for large areas it is nice and less expensive to spray than to try to spread that ' yellow death'... you know it got that name for a reason... when people TRIED to spread it.... :D

In between sparring w/you, I've been finishing up the installation of some halogen lights in SWMBOs dressing edifice.

I really should have some bonus "Good Husband Points" for spending when I'm done...that is, if I don't burn down the house.

P.S. No, I'm not taking that silly pad down for you, or anyone else for that matter.

Try contact cement. I find spray glue to be worthless, but contact cement is cheap and once its on there, it aint coming off!
