Squeak squeak squeak while rolling
 

Hi,
I'm on vacation right now with my 300D and when I was driving next to a road divider (on my left) with the window down, I heard a squeak squeak squeak noise coming from what I think is the front. What could this be? Wheel bearings? (they were replaced 50K miles ago, the car has about 160K on it now) I can only hear the noise with the window down and with no stereo on. Once the windows go up, it's hard to hear. Thanks for the advice. This board is wonderful. So wonderful that I have had all my questions answered just by reading and following everyone else's posts. I need to take this car on a thousand mile trip in three weeks. Should I address this problem now? or should I wait until it gets worse? Could the squeaking have to do with brakes? The rotors haven't been replaced in a while. Oh, and I hear the noise while coasting. It is probably there while accelerating but I can't hear it over the engine.

On my 1987 it seems to be the rear brake pads that are doing this. I think its the pads because a light tough on the brake pedal will typically stop the squealing. And, they will squeal sometimes when coming to a stop.

Thanks for the fast reply. So do you think that worn front brakes (worn discs and worn pads) would cause this squeaking? I think, but am not sure, that the squeaking doesn't really change when braking. The rear brakes are relatively new.

Yes, the front brakes could squeal too. But, if you don't get a change in the squeal on applying the brakes, that would tend to lead me toward the wheel bearings.

You should be able to tell what's going on by jacking up the front wheel on that side and spinning it around.

Does you car have a center bearing on the propeller shaft. Those bearing do cause a squeak when worn out. If it does have that center support bearing, spray some silicon spray on it. Spray ir all around that bearing and see if the noise is gone, if so you have found your problem. You need to replace that.

Also make sure that nothing is sticking in the tires like a stone, nail etc. Also make sure its not one of the fan belts or AC compressor clutch.

Last time my car did this and it sounded like it was coming from the front. However, it turned out to be the rear parking brake shoes (the springs rusted out and snapped?!@#)

I'm not too sure what exactly your squeak sounds like but my 87 300D is making a squeak too, i think from the front aswell, but I suspect some worn rubber bushings.
Does your squeak coincide with little bumps/irregularities in the road? I hear my squeak driving slowly or coasting (traffic) on good roads. I'm going to monitor mine for a while longer, the car handles and steers fine so far.
