small perforation on back muffler
 

I have a small perforation that looks like a nail hole in the middle of the sheet metal of my rear muffler. I happened to notice it when I was putting in a new differential mount this weekend.

The hole had some soot around it, so I assume there is some leakage.

Is there an easy fix (I don't have welding equipment, maybe this is a good excuse to get a mapp torch)? JB weld is only good to 500 degrees, which doesn't sound high enough. I only found a couple of references to tape on the web.

I realize that this is really a trivial problem so there is no urgency.

Anyone know of any easy solutions?

Replace the holy mufler with straight pipe ...
 

...and put one of those HUGE chrome "Rice Boy" exhaust tips on the end. über cool eh?

Seriously, a MAPP torch isn't going to do you much good there...not enough heat. I saw in anouther thread that you really don't need that last muffler. I guess the chrome tip would be optional too.

I have mine wrapped with a muffler fixing silver tape. About one year now and still holding very well. Also the muffler in my diesels are much cooler than Honda or other gas cars after a long drives also.
Lets put it this way, I can touch the muffler of my car after a 50 miles drive without getting burnt. So I am not sure if high temp is an issue. JB weld was holding a crack on my old 1982 caprice wagon engine block for about 5 years and did not give up before the tranny gave up.

I had the same problem last year with one of my center mufflers. I fixed it using a layer of JB Weld, with a 1" square of Muffler Bandage held in place by a 2" square of aluminum with one rivet in each corner. It started out a pinhole, but, like a cavity in your teeth, when I got done filing away to solid metal on all sides, it was the size of a nickel. (I know it's overkill with the riveted aluminum, but they wanted $188, plus tax, for a new center set, so this muffler has to last me a few more years). The fix has lasted for 12,000 miles so far, with no sign of any leaks. Total cost: $6.50 for JB Weld and Muffler Bandage, and free rivets from my son's cheapo rivet gun. I'm a happy DIY'er!! If the JB Weld will work with the heat of the center mufflers, you won't have any problem with the cooler rear muffler.
