How Much Better the Road Looks Behind My New Hood Ornament
Life is rough for a Mercedes-Benz hood ornament in the big city. When I got my car, the star was snapped off cleanly. But, for $22.00 from Trans-Atlantic Motors (my local MB dealership) I don’t know if it’s just me, but isn’t life more beautiful having that silver star leading you down the road?
Removing the old hood ornament was easy, once my dad bent it, and broke it into pieces so what was left would come out of the hole! Putting the new one halfway-in was real easy, but it was getting it back out and getting it all the way in correctly that took longer than the 3-easy steps in the manual! The star sure does look nice and shiny with that heavy chrome. Do all MB parts come with cool Mercedes-Benz holograph seals on the box? |

Yeah, the holograph is pretty much a standard thing, even on the fuel filters...which by the way...I suggest you replace if you haven't already having just purchased the car. It isn't hard, however your OM603 doesn't have a priming pump, so you have to pour fuel into the filter before you put it on and then crank the hell out of the motor, and then it will start.

What steps will you undertake to keep that shiny new three-pointed star from becoming someone else's trophy or necklace? I had thought that the practice of ripping away these proud appendages had gone the way of Public Enemy or NWA...

Some aftermarket company (I think it was AdSit) sells one that's detachable.

Zoonhollis,
That’s a good question. The step I took was I turned the urban cruiser and changed it into a rural one. In the rural community I live in, you could leave the car running on Main Street, and still no one would touch the car. 240Demon, thank you for the advice. I appreciate it. |

Welcome!
Indeed, it is definitely better with the star. Especially at night, the city lights reflect off ot it and you can see all the surroundings in the chrome of the star. Very cool! You should stop by one of our semi or multi seasonal "Mercedes Diesel New England Get Together's" They are a cool way to see everyone who owns diesel Benzes.
Plus I've never seen a W124 Diesel up close. Have fun, definitely change the fuel filters. Not fun fiddling around on a country road with a clogged fuel filter. |

Hey Kylepavao2, dude, the 190D is a W201, the W124 is a wee bit bigger, for the 300/400/500 E and 300D models after the end of the the W123 line.
The star is definately a must when you are rolling a Benz (and for those of us diesel heads, we are providing a public service by killing all of the mosquitoes in a 1 mile radius with our cloud of blue)

If BenzGirl and I both attend the next GTG you will see both the 201 and the 124. Regards, Joe

Hey Kyle,
That’s a mistake easily made! I’ve only just learned that that motor (the 602) came in that car a few years, ’87 for sure (and maybe ’88 and ’89?) Interestingly, I thought my car came with a 4-cylinder before I bought it. (There isn’t a 2.5 badge on the car! ) After looking under the hood, we counted five injectors (and a turbo) and we were smiling! I think that motor came in the W124 cars after 1987, and maybe in the W140 cars somewhere in the early ‘90s, so I think of myself as a lot of power in a lightweight chassis! Jfikentscher, if turbodiesel’s at the next GTG, we’ll be representing 1987 in a big way! |

Everyone knows the W123 reigns supreme with the 617 and the 616 over the electronically controlled gizmo weird engines of 60X series. Its ok....your still cool
Just foolin. I'd prolly like the 201/124 bodied diesels if parts weren't expensive. Nothin like an oil change on a thoroughly used W123..basking in the smells of oil diesel and caked up oil...makes you feel like a big Panzer mechanica, even though its a 67HP 4 cylinder diesel. I will try to rekindle the NE Gtg thread, maybe for the end of July. |

Kyle,
If higher fuel efficiency increased, aerodynamic performance, and multi-linked suspension handling are all disadvantages, I’ll have to suffer with them. (Did I forget to mention the 119 MPH top speed? Oh yeah baby!) But, in all seriousness, I just filled my tank up for the first time, and I got 500 miles from 14 gallons of fuel, which works out to approximately 35.7 MPG. |

I would have to agree with Kylepavao, he is right that the W123 is, and will always be the ultimate Diesel Benz. Talk about a tough motor. The 240D's are run wide open their whole lives and still go for 300,000+ miles.
