Exclamation Head gasket??????

I started to doubt the millage on my 350 SDL after having to replace the head gasket at 250,000 km. One MB mecanic told me that more than 50% of the mb's head gasket have to be replaced, its their weakness. Also he said that the timing chain should be replaced. Is it true?????????

Jeepee,

Did your mechanic measure the elongation of the chain or just say it needs a new one because of the milEage?

If he mesaured the elongation and it was out of spec, then the chain should be replaced or an offset woodruff key used. If he didn't measure the elongation, then he is probably wrong. Did he check the chain tensioner?

In a same manner, were any tests done to see if the head gasket was leaking?

jeepee,

If you are suffering from higher than normal oil consumption and smoking, you should be looking for more than just a head gasket problem. Before the head is off you should have a compression and leakdown check done, and a wet compression test done (my dealership mechanics say they do this routinely and have no problems with the oil they use igniting from heat of compression). This engine is notorious for bending rods, which then ruins the geometry of the bore in the affected cylinder. Good luck, Jim
