My '82 240D AUTOMATIC averages 21 +/- seconds 0-60. 250,000 miles, A/C off. That doesn't seem so very much slower than the "much preferred" 4 spd. I will keep my automatic, thatk you very much.

" nobody has posted a 240D speed for pdxman to use "

I should check it someday, maybe I just dont want to be dissapointed :) I did get a big improvement with the rebuilt engine in my wifes "79" 240d as far as fuel millage goes, almost 34 MPG now. summer fuel mix may have bumped it up too.

I dont think 240d drivers are holding back we just dont want to know:D :D

Well I must find out why my 240 will not do 21 seconds ? I could not hit 60 mph going down hill in 21 seconds . Maybe if I take the other seats out for weight reduction, otherwise if I could even get under 30 seconds I would be happy. It will cruise fine all day flat out but I wonder what is holding it up looks like back to basics maybe the rear fuel filter screen is clogged . I have most of the basic things covered who has a remedy ? Sell and buy a 300 d ?

Maybe what you need to do is drive a good running manual 240d and see what you think. Enough power is all relative. I have never driven an auto 240d but I think it is the "nature of the beast" to be slow. The reason I have a manual is I can fix allot of the problems or more to the point, allot of the problems are eliminated without all the power stuff. IMO a non turbo 300 D with a manual ,and as long as I,m dreaming, make it a coupe, would be my dream machine:D Maybe you could find a good running 240D automatic to test drive and do some comparing. changing that tank strainer is a messy PIA job that is apt not to make your car any faster. Good Luck...Steve

I live in Bel Air, MD---not too far from NJ--depending on where in NJ you live. Anytime you want to drive my 240D drop me an email at michael.s.fowler@att.net

Thanks for the Invite to try the 4 speed , They do come up for sale around here once in a while. I have alot of work into my car so will see in the future about the 4 speed or 300d . I am going to see if there are any more fuel / air adj and a small list of things before I throw in the towel.

I think you misunderstood. My 240D is an AUTOMATIC! Yes, it is 4 speeds, but the tranny does all the shifting. I was offering as a basis of comparison to your 240D auto.

My clutch is repaired, and the results are in.

17 seconds

Another run with the A/C on and a slightly sloppy takeoff yielded 25 seconds.

I splurged and got some "new" remanufactured injectors (all 5).

Before new injectors- 16.5 at best
After- 14.4 at best.

Boost came 200rpm sooner.
Less variable acceleration.
MUCH better low end, little better high end.
Not only that but it at last has a "real" diesel klack to it!
