Giant Cricket?
When coasting above 20MPH or so there is a constant chirping (like a giant cricket). The sound immediately goes away if I shift into neutral. It seems like this would be a tranny mount issue. Anybody have experience exterminating giant crickets from under their 123?

There was a problem similar to that in a MB repair manual and it was caused by a rear axle CV joint. Happened to me once and replacing the axle turned off the cricket permantely.

Thanks, PEH. Would the CV joints be affected by the shift from drive to neutral?

Mccan,
Yes, shifting to neutral will affect the CV joints because it takes the torque force off them. Seems like mine only chirped when I pulled a small camper trailer. P E H |

Time to replace the axle shafts?

Mccan,
Is the cricket noise proportional to the speed of the car? Look up the axle repair procedure in the MB manual before replacing the axles. Seems like there was a spacer or something that could be installed that was supposed to fix the problem. It was over 10 years ago that I had the problem and I don't remember exactly what the remedy was. P E H |
