BIGRED,

The older W114/115 Diesels up to the advent of the W123 had two piece oil filters. There was a large cannister that made up the bypass filter and a nylon screened disc that was reusable and made up the main flow filter. These things do not fit in or belong in a W123. The W123 has always had the filter housing up high, near the firewall behind the injection pump. This unit has had two basic designs that only involve changes to the filter housing center post. The filter element is a main and bypass unit and it has not changed. If you have a two piece unit in there you likely were not seeing any bypass oil filtration and depending on how the parts fit, you may not have had good main flow filtration either. Good luck and I hope this helps. Jim

BIGRED,

Was one piece a flat plastic filter about 3/4 inch thick and the other a separate vegetable can shaped filter?

If so, someone put in the wrong filters. These two filters described above were used on the older Diesels: 240D and earlier models.

I knew something was odd once I went to pull the lid off the oil filter housing. the filter came with the lid, kind of stuck to the shaft. It appears to have been one part that seperated as I can see the filter media from the larger portion.

CH2930 is the fram part number which is correct.

The size of the filter that was pulled was correct, the junk part came apart.

I have only purchased Hengst filters for our 300TD and plan to do the same for the SD.

I will be contact FRAM to see what they have to say and see what they will do if it caused any problems.

The Fram filters are junk, the few that I have used in the 300CD have came apart into 2 pieces when I took them out. This and the fact that they don't offer nearly as good filtering as German filters is why I don't use them. Fram filters may be ok on a Chevy or a Ford, but not on any European car...

Fram is just junk, period. I used to work for the parent company and it was well known. Here is an independent review:

Don't insult my Ford like that

Unless I hear a lot of people recommend a specific brand, I've always used OEM manufacturer filters for my vehicles (for instance, Motorcraft for my truck)...hasn't let me down yet.
