300SD What else to check while oil pan / valve cover is off?

I pulled the valve cover to check the chain and valves at the same time dropped the oil pan to replace it. (had a medium dent in it).

Is there anything else I should check while shes opened up?

Thanks
Don

Bigred,

Not much to check in the crankcase unless you want to plastigage the bearings.

While you have the valve cover off, you might as well replace the gasket. My old one was hard, crusty plastic, but the new one was soft, pliable rubber

I won't sell it to you, but I would be happy to give it to you. I thought i would mention that I bought the new part for about $20.00. After the shipping cost and time waiting for a beat up oil pan, ot maynot be worht it to you.

Let me know,
Don

There is supposed to be a way to change the turbo oil drain grommet without removing the turbo if you have the lower oil pan off. It has to do with removing the lower half of the drain tube downwards. This allows you to replace the two o-rings, one at the half-joint in the drain tube, and one at the rubber grommet. You can also replace the grommet which tends to decay with time.

So, check out your turbo oil drain tube for leaks, and the general condition of the rubber grommet where the tube goes into the block flange for the oil pan.
