Question Does any-one buy diesels as a "weekender"?

A thought came to me this past weekend, while polishing my '72. Am I the only person who has purchased an old diesel for a just-go-get-ice-cream-car?
Mine is a 220 with manual everything, so it's easy to keep. I love the looks of my car, and the 4 doors are family friendly. I know, it's very underpowered, but I enjoy driving it as much as anything I've driven. It's only driven about 1,000 miles per year. I bought it after about an 18 month search. Does any-body else do this type of thing with "run of the mill" mercedes models?
Just curious, and best regards.

Antony,

Nope. My 300SDs are my main mode of transporation. I put about 15,000 miles a year on them. Travel to FL and AZ/NV every year in them. Only other wheels are a 4WD pickup truck.

Talking

Not me. Bought my '84300D specifically to use as my business car and specifically to run on WVO when I want. I spend a lot of time up and down Interstate '81 between my home in PA and factory in upstate NY. We have 4 other cars here, but nothing cruises at speed like the Benz...we'll nothing that didn't cost 25 times what I paid for the 300. At 392,000 miles, there's no value on paper to depreciate...but that just shows how misleading accounting can be! fmb

Not quite a weekender but a vacation/day trip car, which usually include a weekend. The 240D is just the right size for the two of us and our stuff. We had a 300SD (126) but fopund it too big and had more comlications. The 240D will do 75-80 all day on the flat midwestern highways and return 27 mpg. Even though our Corolla and Civic are much more fuel efficient they tend to get a little cramped over several hours.

Guess I'm kinda in between. Origionally bought the SD as daily transportation. But it now is a little more of a "garage queen" since I have one of the Audi Coupes back on the road. I have found the very begginings of some rust in the trunk of the SD, and Seattle weather will only feed that. So it's more a weekend cruiser, and the car we take on trips. I want it to last a looonng time

D is main daily driver and the 240D and 300SD are the weekenders.

I will say the wife is starting to want to drive the SD more and more these days and up till I got it she said she hated diesels.

I know how that goes...my girlfriend thought that diesels only belonged in big rigs when I met her, and now I joke with her about her being in the relationship just so she can steal my car, she loves it so much...she wants one just like it, but doesn't have the $$ yet.

My 300D is my daily driver, but I do play with it as well...as sometimes I play with my truck, while I normally use it to work.

We drive the SDs daily and use the Lincoln on weekends. For trips it is quieter, more powerful, and has a trunk that is twice the size of the MBs. That said, we are toying with the idea of late model 140 350SD as a replacement for the Town Car in the future.

We got our 82 300D turbo for our son who is on his learning permit right now, but I use it as a daily driver since the fuel economy is much better than my 98 Suburban and none of the other guys that ride with me complain about being cramped. I also had to drive it to work out any bugs and there are still a few more to work out (probably will be until he gets his liscense and pays for half of this car ) and get everything working as it should be and be dependable enough that I won't get called in the middle of the night to rescue him. I also use it to teach him about mechanics of it and any other vehicle(boats, cars, trucks, ect.) so that our other vehicles will not have to be guinea pigs for his learning.

Well, my 85 300D is my everyday car... In a year or so, I'm buying a Porsche 911, and plan to keep the 300D as an "ice-cream" car. I never intend on selling it, it's such a great car...

Anthony,

Your "run of the mill" 115 is classic..... worthy of recognition anong vintage car fans, highly desireable body style without ridiculous accesories and gadgets that drive most MB owners off the wall.

Dont know why - but most people think S, SE and SEL models are more collectible than humble stick-shift diesels....... Hence, by attrition the lower end models become scarcer and more desireable if restored to perfect condition.

Comparable collector pieces include the 60's Ford Comet and Fairlane..... each of which outshine any high-end Ford product of that era. You can include the Dodge Dart and Pontiac Tempest in this analogy. More often than not, its the basic 'no-frills' edition that captures vehicle design of any particular era.

No, you are not alone in thinking on basic model as most highly prized vintage automobile to own...... while the sucker crowd follows nothing but deluxe editions.

you better do a few Italian tuneups or the shellac & varnish
will start to cause the gremlins to pound the inside of the
engine with sledge hammers. Add a quart of Marvel Mystery
to the crankcase. That will help keep it clean.

daBenz has always been a summer "touring car". Highly allergic to interstates, too.

daily

the clk55 is the weekend "date" car - no rainy days etc. Purchased Jan 2001 and currently has 6,700 miles - as you do the math, obviously a garage queen - though I've quarter miled it a couple of times and dyno'd it to keep AMG honest

the '91 se-r sentra is the toy - well dorked with (ridiculously modified - for example, adjustable compression & rebound shocks / custom built coil overs, etc), fully streetable but ready to track (which I do a few times a year), 150K miles, my main daily driver thus far. takes a thrashin and keeps on tickin

84 300sd - my mom's old car - dang close to being 100% gone through and soon becoming the "new" daily driver (probably b/c the last set of racing cams in the nissan seems to have prevented me from passing emissions -whoops!) - 181K miles on the diesel
