NO Glow
I hang my head in shame as I type.
Yesterday, it was a nice day when I got home, so I left the windows open. Later, I took my wife's car to an appointment, but stopped to put up the windows in mine lest it rain. Turned the key all the way, upped the glass, and got out. Unfortunately, I forgot to take the keys out, so the glow plugs remained on. I arrived home an hour or so later, and seeing the dash lights, quickly reallized my error. Unfortunately, the car was not forgiving, and I couldn't get her started. No glow light. No nothing. Turns over just fine, but wont ignite. Its not the 80 amp or any other fuse. All plugs show 9ohms resistance. Nothing seems out of the ordinary. Plugs less than 1 year old. power to the glow relay box. Any guesses? Thanks. Paul

Test for power at the glowplugs themselves. IF there is none check power at the harness connector on the relay. somtimes this harness connector becomes sketchy and wont supply power.

Does the relay click when you turn the key on? If not, its a wiring problem or bad relay.
Letting the GP run till they turn off won't kill them or damage the relay, so whatever is going on is coincidental. Peter

Wallknight,
If you have 12 volts at each GP, measure the resistance of each GP. It should be about 0.7 ohms. If you don't have 12 volts at the GP, either the relay, fuse, wires or connection is bad. P E H |

If functioning correctly, the glow plug relay should drop out after 45 seconds or so, thus saving your glow plugs.
First thing I'd do is pop off the fuse cover and check all the fuses. I'm thinking you may have blown the fuse that powers the circuit that throws the glow plug relay. After that you have to start testing for voltage at the glow plugs as PEH stated. Ken300D

ok, here is the latest.
There is power to the relay, and through the 80amp fuse. There is no power to any plug, measured from the posts on the relay. All fuses seem to be in tact (checked with an ohmeter) The dash "clicks" after about 1 second, but the light does not come on at all. Anybody know which fuse might be the culprit if any? I lost my owners manual. Oh, there is 12 volts to the #1 wire on the 4 prong terminal of the relay. (purple)

When my #1 plug burned out I had no glow light. I had actually lost 3 of the 5 plugs and almost didn't get it started when it was in the high 20's. Had to push the car out into the sun and wait for it to warm up into the 40's before I could get it to fire. After replacing #1 the light came back on but still was not right so I replaced the other four. I think the glow system on the 300d fast system uses the #1 plug to sense engine temp and it may have shorted out causing your system to kick off. Replace it first and see what you get. It is one of the easy ones to get to.

Ok,
tried replacing #1. still no good. I dont think the relay itself is contacting. I just sprayed it all out with electronics cleaner; still no good. Any last thoughts before I throw down for a new relay? thanks!

Paul:
If you have battery voltage to the relay, it clicks, and you don't get voltage on the GPs, the relay is shot. Peter

Peter,
I can hear it click from inside the car, but no clicking from the unit itself. Time for a relay i guess. Thanks
