240D Clutch Problem

My 1980 240D with a 4 speed manual transmission has a problem with the clutch. When I lightly depress the clutch, say for the first time before driving it each day, the pedal goes all the way to the floor. I can reach down to pull it back up, pump it and it will work fine until the following day. I have replaced the clutch slave cylinder and the brake master cylinder, but that hasn't stopped the problem. I have done a search but can't seem to find a thread that specifically addresses this situation. Does anyone know what the problem may be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

quite possibly you must go back and bleed the system again.

The only significant part left, then, is the clutch master cylinder. I just replaced mine yesterday with a new one from Fastlane. The supply hose from the brake reservoir is held in to the master cylinder by a rubber grommet. Mine had gotten fatigued and allowed the supply hose to come out.

In case you don't know it, this system has to be reverse bled by forcing brake fluid under pressure into the slave cylinder bleed screw. Otherwise it has the potential to trap air in the master.

Oh, the last part then is the high pressure line from the master to the slave. That's easy enough to check for a leak.

Rick,

You can bleed the clutch system by connecting a hose from the bleed nipple on the left front wheel to the nipple on the slave cylinder. Just pump the brake pedal and fluid will be pushed thru tyhe clutch system.

If your brake reservoir feeds the clutch hydraulic system, the fluid level will remain about the same. If you have a separate reservoirs, you have to watch the fluid levels in both: Brake reseroir will get low and clutch reservoir will overflow.

Thanks for the replies. I did the reverse bleeding yesterday, but it didn't fix the problem. I guess I'll replace the clutch master cylinder now.
