valve adjustment, how often?
just want to ask how often can you valva adjustments, because after the one i had about 3 weeks ago i really felt the difference in my acceleration, i was wondering if i can do it regularly like every 4 mos. when i regularly have my oil change

Factory recommendation is 15,000 miles.

Well
My mechanic says MB recommends 15,000. He says he usual goes 30,000 miles. The way I see it is, he charges me 60 bucks to adjust the valves. I do it once a year, and call it a day...or a year. It's not expensive to do, might as well do it at recommended intervals.

Joseph,
MB says every 15,000 miles. But I think as that the engines get older, the engines need valve adjustments at less frequent intervals. Example: After 25,000 miles since the last adjustment on my '79 300SD, I was about to adjust them again. But before I loosened any of the adjustment nuts, I check the clearances. Not one of the valves needed adjustment. They were all within the factory specification + or - .001". I'm waiting for another 25,000 miles to occur so I can measure the clearances again, but that will take another year. So the true answer is how often the valves need adjustment is: whenever the clearance is out of specification. How often should the clarances be checked, I would recommend 25,000 miles. But you should determing how many if, any are out of spec and how far they are out of spec to determine what the best frequency is for your engine. To do this you have to have your mechanic give you a measurement of each valve's clearance or at least how many valves actually needed adjustment. My vote is once a year if you drive less than 15,000 miles. That way you have the opportunity to take a look under the valve cover at other things, like the timing chain and the ports where the hoses enter the valve cover. I agree that it is good to keep a record of your work, and that you don't need to adjust a valve that does measure OK. But you do need to measure it.

THANKS!
Thanks to all of you guys,
the next time i will go to the garage i'll have the clearance checked, b'coz, just after about a month my acceleration seems back the way it was before the adjustments, anyway i asked the guy who was doing the adjusments before and he said that it was making "tukod" that's filipino for pushing or leaning, and i don't know what that means maybe what he means are the valves are pushing or leaning too much! idon't really know. and also how long can i delay cleaning my injectors and what are the consequnces in delaying it? please help me guys! thanks again Joseph C. I think 'tukod' in this context means touching. In other words, there's no clearance between the cam lobe and the rocker arm. I remember the term being used to describe the piston hitting an open valve such as when the timing chain or belt broke. The typical response from bystanders is 'patay!'
What do you mean by cleaning the injectors? With good quality fuel through effective filters you shouldn't have to clean your injectors ever. In the real world, you'll notice an improvement by running a good quality injection system cleaner like LubroMoly Diesel Purge once a year or when you replace fuel filters. I don't know if that product is available in Manila or what substitutes are available there. See what reputable Diesel shops recommend. The injectors can also be taken apart, cleaned and calibrated. I don't think there's a schudule for such service. What shop do you take your car to in Manila? Sixto 95 S420 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

hi sixto!
hi sixto,
seems you're familiar with filipino but i'm afraid of that word 'patay' what does that mean is it the end of my engine? or that valve? do i need an overhaul already and have my valves taken to the machineshops? what i meant about the injectors was calibrating, b'coz that's what i thought they call it over there, 'coz everybody says i'll get more boost and more mileage (kms. for us here) if have the injectors calibrated but these seems to cost a lot so i'm still trying to gather more 'dinero' for it, but if i still delay calibrating will it finally affect my engine and cost me a lot more, besides they say you really need a calibration if your car smokes a lot which my car doesnt', well maybe a little but not a lot and also i take my car to a shop which was recommended by the previous owner of my ride sorry for the long post, i really want to learn more about diesel mercedes b'coz i really want to keep this car of mine even if the wife says otherwise, thanks |

Joseph.
I've been driving MB Diesels for 35 years and have yet to clean or calibrate an injector. I did replace 1 or 2 injectors when there wae a noticable knock in one cylinder. I took an injector out of a parts car/engine I had and replaced the injector that was causing the knock. Problem solved. I have had an IP or 2 rebuilt and calibrated, though. P E H |

To clarify, when a valve makes contact with a piston, it's usually instantly detrimental hence the comment 'patay' or dead. In your case, diminished clearance between the camshaft and rocker arm is survivable for the valve if corrected quickly.
PEH brings up a good point. Dirty injectors usually cause a knocking sound. If your engine isn't making any undue sounds, I'd look into checking, cleaning and adjusting other things before removing the injectors. Injectors have no direct relationship with boost. Do an archive search on cleaning the ALDA boost line, checking throttle linkage adjustment inlcuding checking that WOT at the pedal is WOT at the IP, and if you're adventurous, adjusting the ALDA for more power. Mind you power comes at the expense of fuel economy unless your car is way out of tune. Out of 3 Diesels, I've adjusted the ALDA in 2 to reduce smoke, not to squeeze out more power. A 300TDt will do 160kph which is all the speed you need in the Philippines. Quickness is another matter. Sixto 95 S420 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |
