Oil comsumption or leakage...

Ok after hours of reading back messages on this forum, I hope that it's ok to ask these questions.
ok so 3 months ago I bought an 81 300SD Turbo. I like this car very much, it has good power and it passed its pre-purchase inspection from a reputable shop. It did have some oil leaks at the time of purchase, however the engine was so oily that it was difficult to tell where it was coming from. SO now I 've had teh valvecover gasket replaced with all 17 rubber parts, and the valves adjusted, and the engine steam cleaned. This car had just under 300,000 when I bought it, it now has 300,500 or so. it was using oil when I bought it, but it seems to have increased some over the past few months, (or maybe I wasn't paying close enough attentiona t first, but I think I was) It loses almost a quart of oil or more when I drive for 15-20 miles at high speeds ie on freeway, over 55 mph. I've taken it back to the mechanic and they think it may be the turbo seals, however another mechanic I took it to said he thought the o rings were shot, so the engine or at least the short block needs to be redone. THe top end was rebuilt 1-2 years before I bought the car. NOw I have to check the oil daily, and if I drive it on the freeway, i have to add oil daily also. Any recommendations, would be appreciated. I have some limited mechanical ability, and I don't want to get snowed by these mechanics.

welcome aboard

Get a compression test and leak down test done. This will tell you which part of the engine is unhealthy. Sounds to me like you are burning the oil (either turbo seal or rings) versus leaking.

One quart every 15-20 miles!! If it was the rings, I don't think it would even start. I would look for oil getting pumped into the intake (turbo seals). A completely blown valve quide or other internal engine cause would give you some SERIOUS running issues that I think you'de notice. I'd look for a major external pressure leak also (oil filter lines). What color/ quantity is the exhaust smoke (have someone drive and follow them). Fill only to level half way between "add" and "full" on dipstick. Get the tests engatwork suggested.

I would almost bet that you have a big leak with that much oil disappearing. Check for oil on the underside of the car and try to locate all your leaks and fix them before you get into anything too serious.

compression test and leak down

Several shops said they never comressin test diesels withthe pre puurchase. Does anyone know why this is? Also, the car seems to have pretty good power, wouldn't thisindicate that the commpression was good? I'm going to search the leak down some more right now.

I smell smoke - like someone is blowing it . I'd find a shop that says they will do a compression test. Should not take more than about an hour.

If that much oil is pouring out from the engine you should readily see it underneath the car.
