low idle at cold start

this just started happening. only at cold start the idle seems a tad low with a little engine shaking. seems worse with the a/c compressor on, but also happening with the a/c off.
when the engine is at operating temperature the idle is smooth with a/c on or off. as a side note i have never touched the rack pin in 8 years of ownership and it is all the way out.

any suggestions/how to correct?
thanks.

bob

Hello! It's just a guess, but I would check all the glow plugs, as a single bad one would potentially cause this kind of problem.
Good Luck, Adam

Have you checked the idle speed adjuster - left side of block to the right of the injection pump? It's a long slotted screw retained at the base with a 14mm nut - needs a deep socket. Maybe the latter is loose allowing the speed adjust screw to move?

My car does that too sometimes. Other than the obvious valve adjustment and glow plug check, you can try raising the idle speed a bit. I have mine set to about 800 hot which translates to about 750 cold and it idles nice even cold as long as I let the glow plugs heat up for about 15 seconds. I also use a fuel additive with every fill up which raises the cetane and helps smooth out cold idle.
