Too much oil?
just want to ask if it is possible to have too much oil in my engine? b'coz the last time i changed oil i put in 8 liters, i use castrol by the way, but i'm planning to switch to total i heard it cheaper but gives good performance, but hey i don't want to start another diesel oil thread! as i said i pour in 8L of diesel oil 'coz i read on the cd rom of MB that my type of engine 617.952 has an 8L capacity but i remember that the previous owner said he just puts in 6L, and i remember the 1st time i did an oil change after acquiring this car, about 21/2 years ago(and i've subsequently do it every 3-4 mos.) around 7.5L were used.
the other morning i checked the dipstick and it's past the full marker, what can happen to the engine with too much oil? can an excess of 1 or 1 1/2 Liter of oil do much damage i ever? thanks, |
Joe,
The capacity of the engine may be 8 liters but that is with a dry engine. If you didn't get all the oil out of the engine, adding 8 liters may make it overfull. Did you drain the oil cooler and oil lines? If not, you didn't get all the oil out of the engine. If there is too much oil in the engine, the crankshaft can beat the oil into a froth and air can get sucked in (actually pushed in by atmospheric pressure) by/to the oil pump and might cause damage to the bearings. Go by your dipstick. If it shows overfull, drain some oil out. P E H |
...you might get some blown main seals as well.

Correct refill would be about 7 liters.
