Only driver's window works. Others don't do anything (82 300SD)
 

To this august group,

My 1982 300SD had the 3 non-driver's windows quit working. I have just started debugging the problem, and thought I would ask here. I have done the following:

1) I have checked the fuses and, in fact, cleaned the entire fuse box and replaced all fuses with quality, non-aluminum, fuses.
2) I pulled the switch for the right side doors and cleaned the inside out with alcohol and put everything back in. Tested, nothing.
3) I pulled the covers off the 3 doors, pulled the RR mechanism out and applied power to the motor. It worked.

Next I plan to work back on the wiring to see what problems I run into, but it seems curious to me that all 3 doors quit. The driver's window quit, but the fuse was blown, I replaced it, and the window started working again. But no joy on any of the others.

Any tips based on experience out there with this squirrelly problem? THanks ahead.

I had a problem on my 83 SD and it was the fuses. The front driver's side and the backn passanger side are on the same fuse and the other two opposite windows are on another. Check the fuses again and the switches.

i recently had the same problem. if memory serves me correctly the culprit was fuze # 2. a white one. remove and scrape on something abrasive. or better yet, replace.

I'll look at the window lock button, but I've taken an old switch for the left side and tested it and same results. I did put 12V to each of the motors, and they all work, so it's in the wiring somewhere. But the window lock button wouldn't explain the Right Front window, would it?

Yes, I have a multimeter. My thought was to first check continuity from the switches to the motor (or more specifically the wires from the switch to the motor).

I'm not really sure how the lock button works. It is up, so I'm not sure what I would do to bypass it. Would simply disconnecting the connector from the lock button disable it? I'll try that along with the coninuity checks tomorrow and see what happens.

Although these types of problems tend to be aggravating and time consuming, I guess the plus is that it doesn't require much money to fix. I was glad to see all window motors function, in any case.
