Vacuum pump rebuild as normal maintenance
I've got just over 180K on my fine running SD but was wondering about the long term viability of the original vacuum pump. Would a complete rebuild be in order as part of the normal required work?? The manual doesn't mention it. Thanks to all.

The SDL has 265,000mi. on it and I've never touched the vacuum pump. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
However make sure you put the inline filters in the vacuum lines in case the vacuum pump develops a leak. You don't want oil getting into the locking system or the rest of the vacuum system. Dave

The original vacuum pump on my 240D topped 500,000 miles before it started making noise. The roller was starting to come loose. If you wish to check something, the roller is a hundred times more important than the diaphragm portion. If the roller breaks off it can go into the engine and wreck it completely.
I would not even remove the pump for this reason because if you are listening to the engine you will hear noise from the pump giving you a warning before it gets so bad that it breaks off and does damage. Good luck, |

Does anyone have more detail on the location, number, and part numbers of the inline filters? My '84 doesn't have any, although I have seen them on other cars.

The little filters are called strainers. They were not originally on 123 diesels but have been adapted from later models to give a visual warning of oil in the vacuum system. The part number should be 000-078-06-56. Somewhere I have a drawing of where they go and which way they point, but I can't lay my hands on it at the moment.
When I do an oil filter change I just stick a pipe cleaner in a vacuum line and see if there's any oil. So far, haven't found any.
