Drive shaft question
I need to replace the rubber disk that connects the trans to the driveshaft, but I don't know what it's called. If anyone knows what it's called please reply. Also, are they expensive new or should I look for a used one? This is the first repair I've had to do to my benz since I bought it a year ago so i'm a little in the dark about the whole thing.

I believe what you want is a flex disk. They are about $120 for the automatic and $45 for the five speed. Expensive is a relative term, but I think for the automatic I'd call that slightly expensive. For my 123 they are fairly cheap. The above prices are from Fastlane.

Thanks again. Quote:

I wonder what the difference in the auto flex disk and the manual one is and why it costs 3 times as much.

Doesn't a W124 auto use a special dual mass isolator disk? If so, it's very different (and probably the reason it's so darned expensive) from the good 'ol 123 flex disk we all know and love.

If your replacing the flex-disks, remember to do both of them and replace the center bushings while your at it. (does the 190 have center bushings?)

Actually, if you're going to keep the car--and why wouldn't you--you might as well pull the driveshaft and rebuild everything including the center U-Joint. Then you won't have to think about it for at least a 100,000 miles. M.

flexdisk
I changed the rear transmission mount while I was in there to do the flex disk. They are inches apart - might as well do that too.
At 181K miles I expected a lot of wear on the flex disk (**************.com seems to think they have a high failure rate so I tackled the job). Though I replaced it, I thought it looked very good actually. Maybe it's because it is a Texas car. I had intended to do the rear at the same time but after looking at the front, it seemed pointless. You might mark the driveshaft before separating the parts. Supposedly they are balanced when leaving the factory. Also a tip for you - With the car on four jackstands, put the car in neutral - you can rotate the drive shaft as you need to from under the car by simply grabbing the drive shaft so you can access all the bolts on the flex disk easily.
