83 300 DT Brakes
How can I tell for sure what brand of calipers were used on the car? I changed the pads the other day and I swear they didn't seem to be the same side to side. One caliper appears to have some kind of heat shield around the piston. I'm not sure if the other one had it or not. Other than that they seemed pretty much the same, pins holding in the pads and a spring piece under the pins. Car stop strong, no pull.

rm - you may have one of the "heat shields" missing. Not sure it that is the proper name for it. Try to get an exploded view of the caliper/pad assembly and it should show what is missing. You can tell the brand of caliper by looking for markings on the outer side. One brand is Bendix and you can see their trademark/stamping if it is one of theirs. Forgot the brand of the other ones used.

rm - Believe the other brand is ATE. If the spring you mentioned is in the form of a folded cross of sheet spring steel, it is probably the ATE. At any rate that is what is on my '83. Mine did not have but one "heat shield" out of the four possible on the front brakes.

I was told at the dealer that 99% of W123s had ATE calipers. And indeed, my 1983 240D has them
