This thread headline just pulled me right in, I'm thinking the same thing. As many of you know my 83 (shining example of W123) is currently up for sale, but if I want to get an 87 I'd also like to sell the 84 (clean, but a lot of little problems). I probably have mid to upper 2s into it and can get maybe mid 1s out of it, but have only driven it 4k miles so far. I would sort of like to get a little more mileage for my loss if I do decide to sell it. Also if I only have the 87 I'll be racking up some miles on it with the upcoming semester. If that car doesn't have head/turbo issues that sounds like a steal!! I have my eye on an 300D around Baltimore area for $3800 with 150k miles on it, and I thought that was a pretty good deal!

I don't think $3300 is criminal. It's just a starting point. There's nothing criminal about a price agreed upon by both parties.
Good luck!! Joe

If he thinks the car is worth $4000 then maybe $3300 could be acceptable, just say it seriously if he says no just ask what the lowest price he'll take for it is. Typically they don't answer this, or if they do you may still want to try pushing another $100 lower. It is worth a shot, btw if I were to inspect that 87 I was thinking of I would offer them around $3200 just to see what he/she replies with.

It seems that the car may not be for sale. I did to good of a job convincing him that he should keep it. OH well, being a nice guy does not always pay. I guess that I can wait until a early 90 300S come along. Now that would be an upgrade from the W123.

We agreed at 3500 with out the big wheels. Which seems real fair.
The problem now is that he does not have the title yet as he bought the car just 2 months ago. Can we buy a car without a title. Is there a remedy for this situation. |

Hello, I would maybe go to DMV with him and talk to the people there to validate any questions you may have as well as find out if there can be a "rush" title request available. In North Carolina, I used to get my titles in about 2 weeks; two months seems fishy perhaps.
Good Luck, Adam Bush |

The Bob:
Some time ago there was a thread on the forum which compared 124's and 123's. A curious and reoccuring theme was that the 124's seemed to be more expensive to maintain. At least, some of the veterans thought that parts wore out faster on the 124's. Of course, I took note of that thread because I'm a 123 fan! I figure it'll take me a lifetime just to learn the 123 well, so I hope I don't get the bug for a newer one. Don

Don't know about the 87 300Ds but I drove a 92 250D Turbo. (300D 2.5)
If I traded my 300CD for a 124 I'd miss: the coupe body the louder OM617 for a smoother and more powerful motor. very simple interior cooler body lines that's about it I guess. The 250D Turbo was so much smoother. 0-60 times aren't supposed to be that much better but the engine sounded much more relaxed in pulling the car. Maybe it's the smoother transmission too. The 124's ride is definitely better and so is the steering. The chassis is definitely a huge improvement. Just like the 210 is an improvement over the 124 but the trade-off would be loss of that old-school feel.

I really don't think that the W210 is a huge improvement over the W124. However, the W124 is definetely a giant step forward from the W123!

What are you waiting for?
Have the car checked out by a MB mechanic, check the Carfax to verify the mileage and pay him $4000 for the car if everything checks out! Sell you W123 for what you can, at 280K miles vs. 100k on a W124 there is only ONE decision. You can replace everything except miles.

Quite possibly the two largest things between the two for me is I think of the 87 as just another car, my 84 gets quite the notice whether good or bad, the 87 also seems like it'd be much more of a highway vehicle while my 84 loves going 45 but hates 75 (mileage wise).
I'm itching for an 87 even more now than ever.... I really just want something I'll keep for a LONG time, something I can safely sink some money in and get a good return in service. It seems like whatever I put into the 84 won't come out in resale, so why bother? Or just as edge just posted 'you can replace everything but miles.' Everything I want to change designwise on the 84 is pretty much like how the 87 was designed. Why pay $4k if they settled at $3.5k?

87 300d
4000 for an 87 300d? I would jump on that. Its worth that much in parts alone. I have an 82 300d and a 92 300d. I like the 92 better but I Just can't bring myself to part with my trusted old 82. Two months for a title in the Chicago area is about right.

I bought it
Well we both took the leap.
I take back what I said earlier about the car being slow. SHe is fast once she gets going. Real fast. I am sure that she could do the professed 125mph. I asked the young man how fast he got it up to and he said 110 with some petal left. So yesterday he bought his 86 IROC Z and I got my speed upgrade with the 87 300d. The Interior is near mint and she runs well. Now it it time to go through everything. He has some bad glow plugs and I discovered some unknown oil leak. Oh well, if I could stop the 84 from leaking oil I am sure that I can stop this one. IT is not that much and most likely turbo drain, air drain, or oil pan gasket. I will check iti out today. We were able to get a duplicate copy from currency exchange. I will let you all know what I find. Also it still has the trap oxidator on it. Also can I block off the EGR vallve like I did on myw123 Thanks again everyone. She drives like a brand new honda accord for about 1/10 the price. bob c |

Congrats.
Wasn't there a recall on the trap oxidizer? I believe it can be blocked off in the same manner as the W123. Comparing a Mercedes to a Honda?!? That isn't fair at all.

Take the car to ANY local Mercedes dealer and they will replace the trap oxidizer with a straight pipe. Shoot, they might EVEN replace the turbo if it's damaged by the trap oxidizer. Once you have the trap gone, the car is even FASTER.
