I want to buy a car but the seller does not have the title yet
Hey guys and gals
I want to buy the 1987 300d but the owner has not yet recieved the title as he bought it two months ago. How can he sell it to me without the title. THanks again for your help bob c |
I would wait till he could put the title in my hand before I would purchase it.

In most states, if he does not have the title, it is not officially his car to sell. I suppose you could talk him into a contract binding him to sell you the car at a certain price contingent on producing the title.
This does bring up another question - why would someone buy a car and then want to sell it after only two months? There are plenty of reasons this could happen, but I smell a lemon. :) Ken300D |
No Title:
No sale!
You could give a deposit {small} to be refunded when title come's in. Better to say if you get title and my mechanic inspection pans out I will be a possible buyer. This way he must deliver. Once he has money he has no reason to performe. Charlie |
i would wait until i see the title physically. Don't know how it is in your state but in PA there are disclosures on some titles. (r title, speedo disclosure...etc)

BOB,
What is his excuse for not having the title? Two months is plenty of time to get a title registered in the sellers name. There could also be leins on the title, so don't give him a penny until you see a clear title in the sellers name. You might also check the ID of the seller. Something is fishy here. P E H |
Assuming PO registered the car legitimately with insurance in whatever state it's at..... 2 mths might be ordinary beaurocracy lag - so he could be telling the truth.
For expert opinion, ask your insurance company agent..... they are hooked up with title search companies and know DMV regs and procedures. Meanwhile rely on handshake and post-dated check as deposit for say, 1% total cost of the car..... $50 or so. |
