The valve you see dead center is the low pressure side. The high pressure side, at least on my 1985 cali model, is alongside the passenger side of the engine beneath the turbo.
Have fun, Adam

What do YOU mean by 'Retrofit' ? Air conditioning work is more dangerous than most people think ... it has the possibility of maming and blinding you if you don't know which is the high side and the low side.... be sure to wear goggles AND a face shield... and I suggest more reading... perhaps the shop manual on AC from MB for your car ( it is a seperate book ) or a general Automotive AC book.... better to be safe.

The warning that leathermang offers goes double for your car. This is because the low and high side have the same size fittings which allows the gauges to be hooked up backwards. On most R12 cars of the late seventies and eighties, the high side will not fit without and adapter, which helps make you think about which one you're hooking up.

Have a great day,

Read the following web site about automobile A/C and retrofitting:
http://www.delanet.com/~pparish/retrofit.htm

It will help your retrofitting process.

I did my 1985 300D Turbo retrofitting from R12 to R134a over a year ago. It still works fine.

Good luck

David
