Trip Report

Hey everyone, I just returned from a trip that I took to Birmingham, Ala., Atlanta, GA, and Tuscaloosa County, Ala. I visited the M-class factory there and saw how they manufacture them. I even got to see and hear a M270 CDI. It was a very enjoyable experience. The tour guide said the M-class diesel may not be availible for purchase in the states for awhile, but Daimler-Chrysler wants to put a CDI engine in a Jeep Liberty and sell it in the states. I also visited the MB museum next door. They had some exhibits that mentioned the 300SD and other diesels, such as the 1,000,000th MB diesel, which was a W123 240D. The rental car I got to drive was a 2003 Cadillac DeVille, and I was suprised to get 26MPG on the highway at 75 mph. I was going down I-20 westbound between Atlanta and Birmingham on Monday (8/11/03), and I saw a 300D Turbo W123 cruising down the interstate, with Florida plates. If it was anyone who is on this website, just know that the big ol' Caddy with the Georgia Clayton Co. plates that zoomed past you was yours truly. Gotta go.

Joe,

When I called the plant about doing a tour (back in June), the receptionist told me they were closing the plant tours for re-tooling, presumably for the next-generation ML.

Were they in production already?

The M-classes I saw looked like the present generation M-classes, I don't know what the next generation M-class looks like.
