crappy mileage...still..??
i had a post earlier and everyone eluded to the fact I don't have the stock wheels on my car. 205/70-14.....new wheels are 225/60-16. According to the following website I shouldn't be that far off as far as calibration goes. I just filled up and I'm getting 17mpg around town. I was just wondering if anyone else had any suggestions...???
The following have been done to try to remedy this problem., 1) adjust valves 2) check timing (cam) 3) remove and clean injectors 4) adjusted IP The car starts and runs absolutely great with good power. Doesn't use any oil in between changes. I am about to stop a state policeman to have him "clock me" with a radar gun to check the speedo. http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

The odometer is what you need to check. Check it against the highway mileage markers for at least a 50 mile trip or even longer if you can.

Do the math..... increasing diameter of wheels from 14 to 16" will exponentially increase radius - your 17mpg is probably 21..... you can no longer believe what your speedometer and odometer tell you.

As mentioned, you can get out on the interstate and do a calibration over 10 miles or so. Use the trip odometer, but don't reset it while moving (that jams the gears up). Just take a reading at a mile marker post and start traveling. You can calculate how much the odometer is off at the end of 10 miles and get a percentage error.
With 15" wheels and a replacement 2.88:1 differential (vice 14" wheels and 3.07:1 differential stock) my odometer error is running just about 10%. If you are getting an indicated fuel mileage of 17 on the diesel, I suspect you have some additional issue besides being off on the odometer. You are running nearly 50% low on fuel mileage. Smell any diesel fumes? You don't still have the trap oxidizer do you? Ken300D

DieselDog, rim size does not matter. It is the overall circumference of the tire. When switching to a bigger rim I opted for a shorter sidewall tire. The 16" are not matched perfectly with the 14" but are close.
Ken, My car's trap oxidizer was replaced by a dealer with the appropriate recall fix catalyst.
