Does anyone make a replacement wood center console for around the gear shift)?

I've got two 300SD's, and the wood trim piece, the one that surrounds the gear shift, and contains the window switches, are both shot to @&*$. Does anyone make a replacement one? I've already checked the Performance Products website, and unless I just missed it, it doesn't exist with them. Also, how about visors?

There's a fella over in the parts forum that's parting out a 560SEL, and he has a nice looking console for $25. I kinda need on for my SD too, but I'm not sure if the 560 console will fit the SD. Some of the switch holes look different. But you may want to look into that one. It looks in good shape. But I'm going to pass for now. We have a good wrecking yard up here in Seattle with lots of w126 parts. I'm going to take a run down there one day and see what they have.

Rick,

I grew up in Seattle and have still got a ton of family up there. I know you really want to tell me the name of the wrecking yard so I can send my brother over to look around.

Yep. I've been all over the web all morning and have found absolutely nothing other than a 280SE up in Sacramento that's being sold as a whole car as of now, maybe it's going to be parted out.

Since I have some extensive wood experience, I'm going to do it myself. I didn't want to, but I may do more as a sideline, as virtually every 300SD I have seen has a thrashed console.

Anyone interested? If I get a bunch, I'll do them as a group.

Talk to the owner of www.msdra.com - send him an email. He found an immaculate shift surround wood for my 123 last time but the item got damaged before sale so he cancelled it.

Aurora Auto Wreckers. They're on old hwy99(Aurora Ave) in North Seattle. Bad part is they are only open Mon-Fri, no saturdays. So I have to take time off work to go down there. But they have a pretty good selection of stuff.

What part of Seattle did you live? (I grew up in Edmonds):)

Rick,

I grew up in Northern Seattle, in a place you know probably quite well, Richmond Highlands, just above Richmond Beach. I lived off 8th Street, went to Einstein Junior High, was set to go to Shoreline, but moved to Southern California. I knew some Gustafson's, one of whom would be about my age, who went to Syre Elementary, maybe Einstein afterward. Are you him?

You could just buy a new wood piece from the dealer, which will look fantastic, and also make the rest of your wood trim look positively old. :D It will cost you about $200 from one of the online wholesalers. Refinishing your existing piece will be $125-$150. Getting a good used piece will be very hard, most are cracked and faded, and will still cost $50+.

Good luck,

Nope, sorry. Not me. But yes, I know the Highlands. Nice area! You did just the opposite of me. I'm from LA origionally. We moved up here when I was 10 in 1967. Sure miss the sunny California weather!

Watch out with Adsit. There was a thread on here a few months back with some downright scary stories about their cutomer service. Do a search & read it if you're interested. Make sure you understand that if they screw up and send you the wrong part (or a bad part), YOU will pay for all shipping (including return S&H), yes even though it was THEIR fault!! Positively disgusting policy IMO.

I'd try Potomac German (pgauto.com) or Silver Star (silverstarrecycling.com) for used stuff, I've dealt with both and they're pretty decent shops. YMMV, etc.

gawlbpd 08-18-2003 04:15 PM

Yep. Adsit has got 'em. Unfortunately, for $295.00!!! No chance I'm spending that for them.

Like I wrote before, I've got extensive wood experience, so I'm going to crank out a couple of them in a re-finished mode and see of they turn out okay. If they do, I'll keep you guys in the loop.

If successful, I may try to establish a core base and then have finshed ones on hand to sell at something far less than $295.00.

gsxr 08-18-2003 04:29 PM

Does nobody read my posts or what? You can get a new, Genuine Mercedes-Benz dealer wood trim piece for UNDER $200. Why pay Adsit (or anyone else) an extra hundred bucks? Refinishing the wood is not as easy as you'd think, but good luck if you try...

gawlbpd 08-18-2003 05:59 PM

Dave,

I hate when that happens. I'm fairly new to this. Who are the on-line wholesalers?

Greg

gsxr 08-18-2003 08:21 PM

Greg, for most parts, we like to go through FastLane since they support this web forum. For "OE dealer" parts, like the wood trim, FastLane has to buy it from a dealer themselves, then mark it up & sell to you. At least as far as I know they do! ;) So the best way (AFAIK) is to go dealer direct. I know Caliber Motors in SoCal (www.calibermotors.com) sells at wholesale, and I've heard that Fletcher Jones does as well (another SoCal MB dealer). Also, Rusty (rusty@mbz.org) usually sells at wholesale, via a dealer connection he has in Florida. Note that MB's "list" prices are just a guideline for dealers, and they can charge as much as they want. Some only lack the gun and the mask, if you get my drift. :p It pays to be informed. Here's a link to an older MB USA price list... it's an 8MB Word doc, that shows dealer cost, "wholesale", and finally recommended list prices:

http://www.meimann.com/docs/mercedes/MB_PriceList_Nov-02.doc

Note there is no decimal point so "18900" means $189.00. Also note that this list is 9 months old and MB has jacked up most prices another 5-10% thanks to a weak Euro currency exchange rate. It's still a handy reference though, along with the EPC (Electronic Parts Catalog, the dealer's "electronic microfiche"). The EPC used to be for sale all over eBay but have vanished recently, I wonder if MB cracked down on the sellers? Hmm...
