I know it has been posted on this site a few days ago.....but Walmart has Mobil 1 15w50 for $18.88 for a five quart jug and Rotella T 0w40 for $12.84 for a four quart jug.

I stocked up because the price will go back up.

Mike123:

Do you mean Rotella 5W-40? Or, is there a new oil on the market?

Chitownflyer,

Oil preferences have been discussed ad infinitum on this board. I would recommend you do a search. Basically, any CH-4 rated oil, mineral or synthetic based, is good for your diesel. Every one has their own belief as to what is best for them. Just be sure to use quality flters, a diesel rated oil, and "change it hot and change it often."

Personally, I have had tremendous success with Rotella Synthetic. It noticably reduced clatter, smoke, and oil burn off in my '92 300D. I use it exclusively on my 96 now. I get it from Walmart for 12.88/gal when it is on "rollback" and have extended my drain interval from 2.5K to 5K. Considering that the mineral Rotella is $6/gal, the synthetic pays for itself and you have to change your oil half as often. But, that is just me...

thank you ... I had just purchased a 1981 240D and wondering what kind of oil to put it to it. the Rotella 5W-40 brand was
Recommended and was wounding if it was a good brand of oil.

I know ever one out there has a preference but I was just wondering if the rotella oil was with in ball park as to quality needed for use in the 240D engine.

thanks again

Does it really matter the brand oil? If it meets the CH-4 spec or whatever spec is the latest for a diesel, does it matter?

All,

As slowmoe already noted the subject of what kind of oil to be selected for the various lubrication tasks is the subject of much debate here and on all the other boards at Mercedesshop.com. Please do a search on the subject before hijacking this thread. In most cases hijacking a thread to answer a meaningful question that comes up in the discussion is actually beneficial, but in this case the subject has been thoroughly chewed on elsewhere. So, if there are any other "off the original topic" oil subjects someone needs to bring up, start another thread please. Jim

The price of oil probably depends on the market you are in. A gallon of oil probably cost more in the NYC area, versus say, Charolette, NC. Just like the price of diesel varies from, city to city, state to state. Most of it having to do with taxes. Here in South Central NJ, Walmart sells 5 quart jugs of Mobil 1 15W-50 for $18.83. Now add 6% sales tax and you have $19.97.

With regards to P.E.H.

Mobil 1 at Walmart

I was in Walmart today and they had Mobil1 oil for $3.75 a quart.
That's slightly less per quart than the $18.88 5 quart container.

This was in Vestal NY (near Binghamton).

It's $5.10 plus tax at the MB dealership in San Jose, CA.
