Oil Filter Tube Orifice???
Just completed my first oil/filter change on my '87 300TD and overall it went well. Question is how easy should air or liquid flow through the tube that the filter centers on? On this occassion I was able to take it from no flow to some. Considering the size of the orifice, I may have gained all there was. Just wondering if next change I need to do something different to ensure I have it doing exactly what it should. Thanks. Steve

A couple of things can improve oil flow draining through internal galleries and passages...... try removing the oil cap and dipstick, and drain oil when its hot after highway run.
Btw, since you're gonna be changing your own oil... google search "futomoto oil valve" - itsa device that eliminates hassling with sump drain plug - at expense of slowing down draining process through smaller valve opening at the sump, but its worth it!! |

I think that tube is pretty much the same as the one on a 617 oil filter housing. It shouldn't have much flow, it regulates how much oil goes through the built-in bypass filter, you don't want much going through it. As long as it flows some is probably ok. It's good to check to make sure there is flow every time you change the oil though...... I think it may have an internal valve so it only flows from the top down but I'm not 100% sure about that.
