240D Fan

I am wondering if the 1983 240D is supposed to have a fan clutch, because mine doesn't and I have heard people refer to others that do. I was just wondering...

No fan clutch on yours is factory original.

I was under the impression that the 9 bladed fan only attached to the fan clutch and not directly to the water pump. Am I mistaken.
Can anyone comment on the significance of the differences of running with/without a fan clutch? Since the fan clutch is bad on my 409d and costs about $500, I have given some thought to just putting on a fan without a clutch. How much power will this rob from propelling the vehicle?

I read somewhere that adding a fan clutch to a 240D was good for about 5 hp.

It probably is... but then that is just one more item which can go wrong at just the wrong time... I would try the updated fan first...and be sure all the other cooling components are in good shape...

Jeeze! That's an almost 5% increase in output!! That's got to be the most cost-effective power gain you could possibly do to a 240D.

Let's see...
Junkyard fan and clutch — $60
Increased power — ~5bhp

The ability to enter
freeway without having
to place a slow-moving
vehicle triangle on your
rear bumper — Priceless!

I may have been looking at the 300 engine catalog which says the 9 blade is the factory upgrade for the fan... will have to look closer... but seems some type adapter could be made easily to put the 9 on the 240... might even be able to be made on my 6 inch atlas lathe... LOL

Wish I could remember where I read that. Might have been an old Star Magazine or someplace like that.

240D linkage

May as well start the 240D speed forum with a caution, was adjusting the linkages from the pedal to the butterfly to the i.p. trying to keep the pivot under the exhaust manifold from hitting it, which led to more smoke, so readjusted the others. That got more advance on the butterfly compared to the i.p., less smoke and quieter run than when I bought it! But not satisfied, tweaked a little more and was able to get the arm controlling the fuel on the i.p. to come in line with the linkage locking the entire system a wide open throttle I'm still getting all the gunk off to where one can actually see some of the engine parts, and can see now the spring that is supposed to wrap around that control arm is broken so it doesn't push the arm back down. So be careful of what seem like minor tweaks.

I just removed the butterfly from my throttle, It's just there for the EGR, mine isn't working anyway, and diesels don't need a throttle.
