Switching to Duracool

Maybe. No flames. Car had 134a and has the adaptors for that installed. Can I just use a 134a compatible charging/vacuum hose manifold guage set to do this or is there another adaptor for duracool?
Thanks Much.

134 adaptors work fine. Just be sure you label the system in a couple of places. Also don't overfill. 2 cans of duracool (12oz total) should bring you to ~ 28PSI at 1500 rpm and is where you wil get the best cooling.

If you do what you are proposing you will be breaking one law, a Federal law, for sure and possibly be breaking state law also.

To begin with it is mandated by Federal law that any system that is charged with a particular refrigerant has the appropriate adapter fittings for that refrigerant. You're messing with the Federalies here. I'm not preaching, it's your business, but I want you to be aware of what you're doing.

Secondly, duracool and other explosive refrigerants are against the law in 18 states and the District of Columbia. I don't know if Rhode Island is one of those states or not.

You would be MUCH better served to stay with the original refrigerant, or if you MUST convert, use nothing besides 134. The snake oil refrigerants such as duracool are everywhere and they are causing many problems for many people. They are contaminating our remaining recovered R12 supplies and they are causing much woe for the hard working people who are trying to earn an honest living repairing automotive a/c systems.

Please do everyone a favor, mostly yourself, and use 12 or 134.

Good luck,

These are the 18 "states": Arkansas, Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin, Washington, and the District of Columbia, according to the EPA. (17+D.C.)

134a fittings are required plus appropriate labeling.

Since California is not on the list, I'll give Duracool a try if my R134
retrofit ever gets failed.

If you're going to have 134 fittings on it, why not use 134?

Although I would never use any of the snake oil refrigerants, I do understand how the R12 pricing and availability problems drive people to look for alternatives and most of these people are ignorant of the problems that these snake oils cause for the folks trying to make a living in the auto a/c business. But I REALLY can't understand why they would use anything but 134 for a 134 system.

I suppose that many of these people just believe that they know much more than the people that designed their air conditioners.

Have a great day,
