I think in California once a car has 15000 miles on it you can buy it out of state and bring it in. Something about restraint of interstate trade.

I know for a fact that MB has a S-Class 400 CDI in the country. I went to the MBCA June Jamboree at MBUSA headquarters and saw one in the parking lot. I think I read somewhere they will eventually bring a TD back to our shores.

I think the best way to import a 45-state car into California is to buy it through a relative out of state. Once the odo has racked up 7,500 miles, it can be registered in CA as a used car.
I know: I did it with my TDI when CA dealers stopped selling diesels . Another advantage of buying the car though a relative is that, with carmakers that include VW, the warranty is transferable.
