1992 300D 2.5 turbo: rectangular hole in the sound absorber on the hood?
When I open the hood, I see sound absorbing sponge on the hood. However, I see a recangular shaped hole in the sound absorber. In that part, I see directly the painted metal hood instead of sponge.
Is this due to wear? Or is it so by design? |

No holes in the hood pad on the 87 -- is there something that fits into the hole with the hood closed?

If I'm not mistaken there should be a heatshield for
the turbo there. The turbo generates alot of heat, thus the heatshield. I have a 83 300TD-T eventough the hood pad is almost completely gone(dry as the desert sand) I have seen pictures on ebay of turbo ones and they have the heatshield there so maybe that is what is missing in yours but I don't believe that the shield is for sale independently. Hope this helps. Louis. |

Louis is right, that spot should have the heat shield. And it's not available separately. Either live with it, or buy a whole new hood pad (~$50, I think.) Not sure if you'll have problems with the paint frying on the hood in that spot without the shield... hmmm.....

If the hole is directly above the turbo area, that is indeed supposed to have a heat shield installed there. The heat shield is constructed of a fairly heavy foil (about the weight of a throw-away pie pan) with foam behind it.
I don't know what it is with Mercedes and foam on their cars, but it's one of the worst things about the cars. So, you probably had one but it dropped down and was lost or thrown away. Keep an eye on the engine shots for your series of diesel on EBay and you'll see one eventually. Ken300D PS. The 1987 300D does not have the aluminum foil heat shield as a stock configuration.

Well on mine the hood pad is gone exept for
some patches here and there. My wagon has 368K and if this was the original pad then it did his job. It does get alot of abuse since the turbo gets really hot and I think over time the heat dries the foam and starts to break down. When the pad is gone the heat could damage and maybe ever warp the hood. On the inside of my hood the paint looks dried and cracked, wich made some rust take a hold. Louis. |
