My car is a '95 E300 Diesel, with no Check Engine Light.

I am following this thread closely, but am still not clear on whether or not I should disable my EGR, (by blocking the vacuum hose) or just let it work as intended.

Right now the vacuum hose is blocked, but depending on your comments I may put it back.

Can someone please clarify.

Thanks

Phil

How is it "blocked"?

Just divert the EGR tube such that it draws fresh air rather than exhaust soot. ?

Harvey, I sent you a PM.
This might help.

SUBJECT: DEALER TECHNICAL BULLETIN 04/98

04/98-3 GROUP 07 - MODEL YEAR 1996/97 E300D (210.020): In cases of slight engine surge at part load between approximately 2000 and 2400 rpm, please perform the following procedure. 1) Check for leaks in the vacuum system. 2) Check vacuum pump for proper function. 3) Check the vacuum transducers (Y31/1, Y31/2) for proper function and leaks (refer to MB-Net Message No. 83 dated February 21, 1997, DTB 04/97, Topic No. 04/97-3). 4) Check the pressure control flap and intake resonance flaps for free movement and replace as necessary. 5) Check EGR valve for free movement and replace if necessary. 6) Check the intake system for heavy carbon build up. 7) Check the injection pump timing and set to specification, if necessary. If all the above have checked OK, the engine control unit should be replaced with a new version as follows:

017 545 93 32 replaced with 025 545 69 32 for MY 96 vehicles

018 545 36 32 replaced with 025 545 70 32 for MY 97 vehicles.

Note: Replacing the ECU will not repair the condition unless the above listed procedure has been performed and all systems are operating to specification.

Dr. Diesel

I solved this issue a long time ago! I posted pictures on the EGR mod of the non turbo 96-97 cars. I think ' michakaveli" even created a website illustrating

See the post: EGR Block plate for 97 E300D
This concept is based on the fact; it's a Fresh Air EGR Mod. The MAP sensors see no change in the intake manifold pressure when feed fresh air rather then exhaust.

I'm still interested in the effects on a 98-99 turbo though.

As for the 98-99 turbo cars it was claimed that it would not work since when the EGR valve is open the turbo would blow air out rather then suck it in. I disagree: To my knowledge the Turbo on the 98-99 cars never produces more then 1 bar or 14.7 psi. (Ambient air pressure at sea level). This means there is always a partial vacume in the intake system. I wish some one would try it!

Should have looked closer (egr)

It was a broken vacuum line from intake to MAP. Sorry I did not see it sooner. Now all is well and light is out. However, I plan to do the "test" adjustment tomorrow. Thanks Dr. D. ; Harvey

Now I'm getting concerned...

Have 105K miles on my 1995 E300D -- and have never had one iota of engine hesitation, surging, yada,,,yada -- nothing. Never messed with the EGR or anything else -- now I'm wondering when the crap is going to start hitting the fan. Do mostly local driving, but every now and then (monthly) I get it out on the interstates and really try to blow the soot out of it. (Took it on a 2,400 mile trip last summer, almost all between 80 and 90 MPH, with the A/C on the whole time, and I averaged 26.5 mpg.)

I ran my E300 on NJ and PA turnpikes at 75-85 mph almost daily, used only the best diesel, changed my oil like a freak, and had continual problems. I averaged about 800 miles a week.

I am now getting about 26mpg on the GS in the same conditions without issue.

It seems some people have almost NO problems, and others have continual issues. A guy on the MBZ.org email lists has over 300kmi on his 1995 E300 (drives it a LOT) and he likes it so much, he just bought another one with "low" miles - ~125kmi!

Note that almost all MB's between 1992-1995 (except, I think, the W202) used enviro-friendly wiring harnesses that break down and cause all KINDS of problems... if you were having weird issues with the computer or electrical system, that could have been part of the reason.

I'm glad to see a repeat of my experience. Lot's of high speed 80-90 mph, AC on all the time, 4500 rpm shifts (italian tuneups courtesy of my wife) and still 25-26 mpg @ 90F and 90% humidity. Never had hesitation. Runs fine but I think it misses those 13 hour drives. If only the plastic parts would not disintegrate
