Noise under the hood

As I was filling up my wife's cat the other night, I heard an odd noise coming from under the hood. I popped the hood and the noise/chatter was coming from the cruise control acctuator. Why would this thing be chattering the way it was, and do I need to be alarmed. The cruise has not worked properly since I have owned the car. It sort of has a mind of it's own and works when it wants to. This is no big deal to me and could care less if it works, I just don't want this chatter to affect anything else.

On another note, after I investigated the above noise, I noticed that the area around the rear injector was quite wet. It isn't the bypass lines...I replaced those about six months ago. Is it possible to have a leaky injector? If so, how do I fix it. The car runs great and is very quiet for a diesel. It does however get very poor mileage...about 20 on the highway and around 18 in the city. I am thinking that this injector could be leaking driving my mileage down. I just need to know how to rememdy the situation.

Mike

On another note
I don't know which car you have, but on a 123 there are three places I know of that an injector can leak ...return line, high pressure line and injector body. When you did the return lines how did you remove them ? If one damages the nipple with a razor blade or similar, it can leak. If one of the other two locations are the problem, tightening may solve it.

P.S. It was hard to resist commenting on the "filling up my wifes cat..." thing.

Maybe I should proof-read before I send... I don't know what happened, but I used to have the types of cars I own under my name. This problem is on an 84 300d. When I replaced the bypass hoses, I simply pulled them off and pushed the new ones on.

"filling up my wifes cat..." thing.

Got to have a little chuckle now and then, like once I wrote BM instead MB and I was not referring to the new cars.

All jokes aside, why was the cruise acctuator chattering the way it was? Is this cause for alarm. And how about that leaky injector, can I simply tighten it down, or will it need to be replaced?

Your injector could be leaking at the joint as they do come apart (using 2 wrenchs, try tightning it up) also there is a "sealing" ring that should be replaced down in the hole when you take the injector out. I would double, double check the return hoses and connection on top. You could lossen the supply pipe and try tightning the injector down. You can get a replacement for under $50.00, a new nozzle, or take it apart and clean it yourself. Your millage is, to say the least, poor.
Good luck...Steve

Thanks for the help. I will try to tighten it down a little. Now, as for the cruise actuator, I can't see where it is going to harm anything since the cruise is an extra anyway.

I would think that either the electrical or vacuum control lines to the cruise could be unplugged to solve the problem.

I had an intermittent cruise control that was cured by scuffing up the contact points for the fuse and perhaps the fuse itself. I think this should top the list of things to try for many electrical problems...make sure the fuses are making good contact and go from there. Your case may not be the same, but clean fuse contacts sure won't hurt anything.
