Need Tranny Help
The trans in the 84 started to make a noise like a stuck or starving bearing, corresponds to wheel speed, not engine speed, not the driveshaft bearing.
1. Ideas? 2. Will the trans from a similar vintage V8 126 bolt in as a replacement? Jerry |

JerryBro,
Since no one else responded and your question was clear enough I understood it, I will pass on my thoughts, hoping someone with more experience with automatics pipes up. First, I would think about changing the automatic transmission fluid and the filter. This, from reading other posts is not really difficult, just possibly a little messy and there is some concern with retightening the fasteners to avoid leaks. They get a precise torque, in a sequence and pattern or the chances are you will have leaks. Also, when draining the old fluid out, be sure you drain the torque converter as this unit apparently has a separate volume of fluid trapped in it. Do a search if you attempt this as there are many threads on the subject. Next, I would look at the transmission and engine mounts. A sound short to the vehicle's structure can make a relatively insiginficant noise sound like the machine is coming apart. The purpose of the mounts is to isolate these noises and when the mounts get old they can transmit more noise than intended, and worse, they can allow things to get misaligned causing unintended loads on bearings and allowing sound shorts. Last, I do not think a V8 transmission is a direct substitute. Hope this helps, Jim

Thanks Jim. I'm ordering a filter and gaskets from Fastlane. I really hoping I don't have to open the tranny up.
