What do you think the problem is? It does burn oil- I am going to rebuild the engine.

my guess that is not the result of burning engine oil. is the coolant level dropping? if so, the head gasket is the culprit.

Is that continuous or just on cold start up?

Bummer.

Right. Steam or smoke?
Smoke is usually bluish or brownish, and smells like, well, burning oil.
Steam is white, and smells like coolant.
Also, coolant level would be dropping quickly.
Can't really tell from a photo, but looks more like steam.

Did it overheat recently?

This looks exactly like a cold startup on my 1987 300D. If you walk behind the car it smells strongly of diesel fuel.

I think its the reason I got the car for such a good deal. Previous owner probably thought the engine was getting ready to blow up.

Probable cause is a slow leak in one or more injectors that allows diesel to leak down into the combustion chamber after shutoff, due to residual pressure from the injection pump. There is a little bit of an oil component too that could be a combination of valve seals and oil blowby condensation draining from the intake manifold.

If it smells like diesel, it is. And although I can see how it might be embarassing with respect to the neighbors, I don't see it as a big mechanical problem with the car. Especially if it goes away after a half-mile of driving.

Hey, if Ken is right, you can avoid a rebuild for a while...

I know. It's such a conflict of interest. I should say "Oh my goodness, that car is going to blow up SOON. I'll take it off your hands for $2000 and relieve you of your troubles."

Check the pump timing while your at it. I've seen 602's smoke like that when the pumps are i the 20 deg aftdc area.

Update on 300D

Thank you for all the input. It has 300,000

The car smokes more on the freeway. I was checking the car and it smoked the entire street. It does get worse with driving

The coolant level is low. The oil level drops. It does smell like gas. The smoke is white. I have had a car that smoked blue=rings. I am going to take it in.
