Stuck on the road... help please

My wife called to tell me that our 83 300SD stalled on the Freeway. I asked her to wait a few minutes and then try to start it. She said it was running rough then quit. We waited 10 minutes and it started a bit smoother.

I am thinking it is the filters, but input appreciated. As I wait for it to be towed to a gas station, I will need to get my tools and gather up the right parts to "try" and fix it.

Thanks in advance.
Don

BIGRED,

First make sure there is enough fuel in the tank. If the fuel tank strainer is partially plugged, it will run rough and possibly stop running when the tank is almost but not completely empty.

If there is enough fuel, try the R&R the primary filter first. If that doesn't work, R&R the secondary filter.

Howdy,

I recently ran out of diesel in my 190d 2.2 with 1/8th of a tank left on the guage. I carry a gallon of vegie oil with me in the trunk, so I could get it going again pretty easily. But, the 190d has a lift pump which I don't think a 617 does.

You might try taking off the fuel filter and filling it with fuel or injector cleaner. If it is fuel related, it should run until it uses up its supply of fuel.

It was towed to a station, some fresh diesel added to the tank, same issue. Mechanic "revved it up and the issue cleared out, at least for the time being. Hopefully she will make it home so I can check it out and not have to do emergency roadside repairs. She is driving mine because the alternator went out on her 300TD yesterday. Not bad, in 2 days she had 2 cars go out of commission.

Thanks for the confirmations.

Sounds like my wife. First she killed her 90 Caddy, now she's working on my 89 190E. It's a bit toughter than the Caddy though. Anyway, Sounds like the guys here are all over it. I would ask her how much fuel the car had in it when it quit. It sounds like the fresh diesel fuel may have been what it needed. Especially if it was at 1/8 tank or less. If we could just convince these ladies that you are supposed to fuel up BEFORE you run out, we would save ourselves some headaches.

It took nearly 30 years, but I finally convinced my wife that our cars run just as well on the top quarter tank as they do on the bottom.
