Spin on filter for 240d
I am rebuilding the engine in my 76' 240d. Does anyone make a spin on oil filter adapter for these engines or is there a latter type engine with a spin on type that will bolt up?

Why? The oil filter housing includes the oil cooler lines, the oil thermostat, and a bypass valve if the filter fills up.

I agree with Kerry. WHY would you do that??????
The Mercedes filter is far superior to any spin on filter out there. Your spending all that time and money to rebuild a Mercedes motor and then your going to put a cheap filter on it????????? I would thing this through again. Dave

The Mercedes canister filter is a dual filter -- a coarse filter for flow directly to the bearings and a fine bypass filter to remove fine stuff.
They are a pain to change on that model, you always end up covered in hot, dirty oil, but the DO work very well. Some later W123 chassis models had a remote oil filter, you might look around for one. Filter was mounted over by the air cleaner, and I think the adapter plate bolts directly onto the block, BUT there is absolutely no assurance that it will work on your block. You also cannot swap to the later model 616, either, won't fit. Peter

I share the dilike of the 115 240D oil filter location . My thought was to get a remote filter form a diesel truck, tractor.bulldozer what ever I can find that accepts a diesel cartrige then take the cartrige out of the 240 and braze a fitting for an oil line to the bottom of the existing oil filter housing then plum a line into the new filter housing with a return line going into the valve cover.I think it might sound more complicated to do than it would be to do.It should not affect the funtion of of the bypass if there is one in the 240 D and would increase the oil capasity a bit witch would be a benifit...........

Both filters are in the same canister -- the mesh do-dad on top is the main filter, removes big crud from the oil on the way to the bearings. The paper filter is the bypass filter, empties directly into the pan via a calibrated orifice in the top of the filter housing. Also, there is a thermostat and the pressure relief for the oil pump in there, I think. For sure the oil cooler thermostat.
I'd leave it alone and put up with the mess, its easier. Peter
