1982 300D... Newbie with several questions
1982 300 D Turbo...
I've got several questions that I will post separately. Thanks for your advice on tools, etc. This board is terrific! Am learning more here than any manuals or books! I will share my various newbie experiences with you all if I may. I acquired my 1982 300D Turbo from a private party knowing little about these great cars, but trusted his advice. She admits to 161,000 miles, but the odometer was busted when I got her and I am sure is well over 200,000. Thanks to your help here, I now have a working odometer and tachometer!!!! My first project was to replace the broken air filter housing bracket and mounts. I have lots of oil in the housing due to blowby, and am trying to determine why. She starts up no problem, runs smooth, gets around 28mpg, and just generally runs great. I do have some typical problems... vacuum leaks in door locks, etc but I am working on these with my new Mity-vac Gauge and Zit-popper. I did have an "incident" with not starting which turned out to be a clogged fuel filter.. the small clear one... now replaced. Embarassing but instructional. Thanks again for all your help. Speaking for those of us who have no mechanical ability and can’t work on our own cars (those of us being me alone, I sometimes believe), this forum is an excellent resource to know what may be wrong and should I have to take it to a mechanic there’s less chance I’ll get ripped-off. I understand what everyone’s talking about, I just can’t do it myself. Well done on you’re new car and what you’ve accomplished so far.

Thanks... if I can do it anyone can
This board gave me the confidence to try these projects. Wouldn't trade the experience for anything... will keep working at it. Have done air cleaner bracket, oil change, coolent flush, fuel filters, cluster repair (bulbs, odometer fix, tach fix, dial painting), vacuum door locks all successfully.. very few left over parts!
I would not hesitate to suggest any of these projects to other newbies now that I have done them. Have found my new Mity-vac gauge and zit popper extremely valuable in learning about this car. Am looking forward to my first oil pan gasket and transmission fluid and filter change this weekend. Also am going to attempt to set the valves sometime next week... wish me luck!
