Ball Joint Question

The only job I've not attempted on my 123s has been a lower ball joint replacement. Although my friend did one with a spring compression tool he made (had to do alot of other stuff at the same time), I have not attempted it.

I've had a local shop do it for about $120 (for one side) and that included the part. So I ask myself, with only a hour for labor quoted, how can they do it without compressing the spring.

QUESTION: is there a way to do this without monkeying around with the spring?

I have a friend who will press it in for me if I can get him the lower control arm and new part.

No need to compress the spring for this job. The lower ball joint comes out with the spindle. Pretty straight forward job.

Actually $120 sounds cheap compared to the $275+parts I had quoted for my SD. Jeese, for that price, I'd let them have the fun.

But the spindle is whats holding the coil spring between the UCA and LCA. Without the UCA and LCA attached, the coil spring is free to release by pushing the LCA down and towards the center of the car, release, and hurt someone. I would not trust the shock absorber to hold the force of the coil spring.

You put another car jack under the lower control arm, and control it with that. Worked great for me when I did my SD.

Yea, put a jack underneath it but it ain't going anywhere with that track rod mount attached.

I would have to agree, after thinking about it. I guess the key would be to not unbolt the track rod while doing it. My experience was an entire suspension rebuild. So the compressor was mandatory.

I did my lower balljoints a while back and posted on it. Easy job with the rented press from Performance Products. Make sure you have a BFH on hand and a large (like 1" dia) brass drift to remove the old joint. A couple good swats with a mini-sledge and they come right out. RT

Thanks again for all the assistance.

I went out last night and got under the car and studied it for a bit. Also noticed that the spindles on my parts car had new ball joints and rubber bushings on the LCA. Very cool. I will simply swap the knuckles out with the ball joints already pressed in.

Having not done it before, I was a bit confused until this thread, a search and studying on it.
