Question SHOCKED to discover EGR valve disabled... advice?

While examining my engine and vacuum system on my recently acquired 1982 300 D Turbo, I was SHOCKED, SHOCKED do you hear, to discover the vacuum hose to the EGR valve deliberately plugged!!! The car seems to run great... starts right up, cruises smoothly and is getting around 28MPG.

QUESTION: What's the advantage/benefit to re-activating the EGR valve? I don't wish to pollute unnecesarily, but it seems to me a smoothly running engine is very efficient.

What is the right thing to do?

Mr Goodfahrt

I don't think there really is much advantage to reconnecting it. I would leave it alone. If anything, it will run better the way it is now.

I agree, rejoice in the fact that you aren't running soot back into the intake and engine. Your car is much better off with the EGR blocked off.

MUCH BETTER BLOCKED!!!!!

I completely removed my EGR valve and block the holes in both manifolds after accidently breaking the pipe. IMHO this makes the car smoke less, and on an old engine should reduce pollution.

Just thought of another thing, with the EGR you lose power, which makes you tend to stomp on the gas more and use more fuel.

The Ayes have it... My EGR is history

Unanimus!... OK, it will remain plugged. Thanks for the opinions.

MAXWELL: Will just plugging it like it is now result in the reduced smoke you report and is it hard to remove and plug holes? Sounds like a worthwhile project if it will be disbled anyway.

Anybody know if this would prevent the car from passing a MD state inspection?

Very simple to make a blockoff plate that fits under the EGR valve. I used 1/16" aluminium, used the gasket as a template, installed it cannot be seen. My EGR was a little open (stuck) so the plate closed it off completely. Inspections on diesels generally are snap-idle tests, opacity tests and visual inspections. A thin blockoff plate will go completely unnoticed and as the EGR is still mounted, it will pass visual. I wouldn't worry about it. RT

Wink

I don't think the Federales bother with 21 year old diesels. In Md they are exempt from emissions inspections....

Would be more nervous about driving on Bio-diesel.... can catch you by sniffing.... wonder if they will come up with remote sniffers like they do stop lite cameras!

we do not have self serve gas stations in Oregon but you are allowed to pump your own diesel at most truck stops at the diesel pumps only section but not if they have gas and diesel pumps on same block.I asked about this at a big chain and the felow said that company policy forbid pumping your own diesel because they might be selling fuel to a terrorist!!!!!! some how this logic passes me by.......

Wayne, plugging the vacuum line won't help if you have a leaky egr. Blocking it off is the sure way to disable it. It's worth the effort to make the plate.

Okay, I know this is off-topic, but I have to interject here. I was born and raised in Iowa and have lived in OKC for the last year and some odd months. Believe me, Oklahoma is not cold. Cool at times, yes; a few cold days, maybe; but characterizing it as cold, no.

That guy was messing with your head. As you know that it's that crazy law in Oregon that forbids you from pumping your own fuel. The reason is that the state fire marshal thinks the average citizen is incompetent to pump their own fuel. There's only one other state that forbids you to pump your own fuel and that state is New Jersey. They have a totally other ridiculous reason for not being able to pump your own gas.
