Donnie Drummonds goes by the name Benzmac here, and is the founder of this site. Contact him through any of the MBAutowerks links at the top of the page. I have no idea if he would do it, but let us know what you find out.

Question Used Power Steering Gear Box

A local wrecker have a few Used Power Steering Gear Box to choose from, how and can you bench test the gear box to ensure quality? The last thing I need is to spend the labour $ to re & re and only to find out that the gear box is no good (excessive play and up to its maximum adjustment).

Used Power Steering Gear Box

I purchased a used power steering gearbox from a local used parts supplier. The gearbox still has the Pitman arm attached to it making it easy to check and feel, although not thorough, for play and binding. FWIW, the setting in the adjustment screw reveals about 4 to 5 grooves/threads above the lock nut (indicating more adjustment available if required) which when compared to mine, reveals about 8 to 9 grooves/threads above the lock nut (adjusted to its maximum).

Now the DIY fun begins following the procedure in the Haynes manual. But firstly, I want to clean it up and maybe paint it. Question: How and what chemical should I use to clean and flush the old fluid in the gearbox? The two hoses have been disconnected and left uncovered who knows for how long?

I believe if the box proves to be good when installed, it should last the lifetime of the car!

Thank you for your help and time.
