Maybe I got lucky
I just purchased a 82 300SD a few days ago. 182K on the OD with a very peculiar knock in the engine. Upon pulling the head, I found an exhaust valve stuck in the guide and when the cam would force it open, the piston would make contact to partially close it. Valve guide is moving in the head.
Things that have been done recently; #1 Trans rebuilt 33K back $2490 #2 Rebuilt engine 28K back $5000 (Adsit) #3 New starter from MB $558 (labor was 269 of this. What do they get for labor rates?) #4 New seat switches included with car. #5 New drivers door latch included #6 Michelin tires with less than 2000 miles #7 New "cheap paint job" (looks good from 20') #8 New brake pads I purchased this car on E-bay for $936! PO thought it was a money pit that would not end! I even have a core engine to pull a head from Will post some pics later, it is still sort of nasty from sitting under a tree for 9 months.

Wow, what a deal!! That is certainly money well spent. The rear looks a bit low. Does this model have the hydrolic rear suspension? Perhaps you just have it weighted down with all those spare parts!! Good luck.

Nice car, it does look a little low. Mine used to be low like that when we'd load the car trunk with newspapers to take to the recycling bin. Now, the trunk space is nearly empty, and the car sits upright. But thats your car, you probably know.

Low rider
Rear end is sitting low because all of the upper end of the engine besides the head is in there. Head is at the machine shop for repairs, maybe next week.
Had to pick it up south of St Louis Mo. , it has sat here for 2 weeks, can't wait to drive it. Ordered rear window gasket yesterday, after a rain last week, I had a lake in the rear floor How do you remove the trim around the rear window? When I removed it on my 81 SD I bent it out of shape, and it was hard to get back in. Don't know if this has any effect, but I still have a leak in the trunk of this car Thanks, Jeff

I'm not stealing the trhread, but, speaking of rain leaks...
When it rains I always get 2 leaks. One at the top of the drivers side of the windshield, about 1 drip per minute. The other is a constant pour form the hand bar above the passenger door where the bar attaches to the body. I can stand the front winshield but I know water is not good to leather. Even a light rain can drip soak a towel. |

82-300td,
Sounds like, if you have a sunroof, your sunroof drains are clogged. Good luck, Jim

Nearly half the cars I've owned developed leaks around the windshield. There's something about the adhesive at the windshield frame that gives out after a long time causing delamination.

Update
I finally found time to work on the MB. Engine rebuilder used some cheap solid brass guides in the head and most of the exhaust valve stems had started to sieze in them. Got the head back about a month ago and installed it, just had time to finish hooking it all up. After bleeding the lines, she fired right up. Sounded so sweet. Now it is time to install the rear window gasket and clean the interior so the other half will drive it. ( Smells a little musty after sitting for so long with the window seal leaking.)

#2 Rebuilt engine 28K back $5000 (Adsit)
Doesn't sound like they have good rebuilds! Hey is nice to know someone else around here is into these diesels. I am in Hampton. I went and picked up a 116 diesel in Rockwall TX yesterday. It is a 1980 and doesn't run, but not in too bad of shape. I got it for a parts car but can't make up my mind to fix it or not.

yes, I know what you mean about the rebuilder. Hope they used better parts in the rest of the engine.
Drove it today! Everything seems to work as it should, tranny shifts sweet with no slipping, AC blows cold (yes it was 72 degrees here today), original Becker radio works. Time to clean it up and start driving it. Glad to know there's another MB enthusiast in the area. Never paid much attention to how many there were until I bought my first one about a year and a half ago.

Congrats on your repair! I guess you replaced all the guides in
the head? The 116 I picked up Saturday has a broken oil pump chain which exited out the sub pan. I am hoping the bearings and crank are still good. The engine turns over freely but who knows.

Yes, I changed all guides to cast iron as original. I have a 617 out of a 84 SD that also had a broken oil pump chain, it would turn easily but the bearings were toast. This is where I got the head for my 82SD.

Maybe you will have a reliable engine now.
I was doing a search to see how common the oil pump chain failure is. Don't remember reading about any. How many miles did your SD have on it when it broke?

I have no idea how many miles, It was purchased as an afterthought when I picked up the 83 SD parts car. The fellow had this engine sitting in his garage floor and wanted to get rid of it. Paid $100 for it, complete with starter, alt, AC comp, turbo and all.
