Frig'n oil line - mounts
Hello all....
On my 83 SD, the upper oil line shifted within the double clamp on the compressor, causing the belt to SAW a cut into the line. Very lucky to have caught it before any damage....now my problem. It became clear to remove the line I needed to remove my motor mounts. It didn't seem reasonable to remove just the one on the compressor side, so I have been attempting to pull both and now my problem. When trying to remove the bolt that goes through the frame member, it was so crusted and or rusted and or tight that the allen head stripped. Anyone every try to cut out a mount? or any other suggestions. Sitting here hands bleeding and spirit broken. Thanks in advance. Don

Yep, those allens always fill with crap that wont allow getting a decent grip on the wrench that reaches all the way into the allen head....... cleaning out the allens with degreaser and high pressure garden hose, or better yet compressed air, is critically important preliminary thing to do.
Luckily the design of allen bolts generally allow vise-grip teeth to bite into the cap...... Otherwise carefully torch the bolts with propane flame - this might loosen em up. Basically you're screwed and should probably lick your wounds, reassemble and abandon the operation until you've got fresh replacement allen bolts on hand. |

Do q search on oil lines. There was a detailed post about 6 months ago explaining to to replace them without removing the motor mount.

Got it but it wasn't easy.
I used a sawsall on the motor mount to cut it up into pieces. As it broke apart the tension gave and I was able to get out the bolt.

Sawzall...hmmm. Probably not a tool that the MBZ engineers ever envisioned being used on one of their creations but nevertheless, a highly useful device when pursuading 20 year old fastners that their time has come to an end.
We used the sawzall and the 4" angle grinder on the tranny swap project.
