swapping a gas engine for a 617??
I got a Euro 230e last fall, 4 speed stick, 225,000 miles. Now I have the opportunity to get a 617 non turbo with 129,000 miles on it - supposed to have been well maintained. The engine is already out of the car.
I have followed several threads about swapping an auto tranny for a manual, but what about putting a diesel in what was a gas car? Anyone done it? can I just rig up a fused switch for the glow plugs? anything else I would want to watch out for? thanks.

Interesting idea.... I have not been around these cars long enough to be of much help except for the GP part, the easy part I used a 15 amp push button switch located on the left under the dash so I can glow the plugs without the help of a relay. I used a solenoid out of my spare tractor parts box, easy to hook up and I think the easy part of installing an engine in a car not built for it. I run into enough snags when things are matched up. Good Luck

We once owned a 380SEL that had been converted to diesel (617 motor). We bought it that way, so I can't tell you too much about the process, except to say, yep, it can be done. They had to swap the dash, to get the glow plug light... the gas tank and lines of course... they left the gas differential, but that made the speedometer out by quite a bit. I think it is quite involved, esp the electrical, but these guys that did ours had done this to several cars, so I guess they felt it was worth it.
Good luck,
