EGR disabled... my thoughts and 1 ?
Hi,
My EGR valve worked fine, but I know there is a lot of sooty junk in my engine because of it. In my 'off road experiment' I am driving it without egr valve operating in order to see if I get less sooty garbage in my manifolds, etc. Right off the start I have seen that cold engine performance is up a fair amount. Mainly the 'street start' type of thing, say going from 10-35 mph. Used to be slower when the engine was cold, now its a noticable amount better. Hot performance is the same. I just stuck 2 bbs in the vacuum line that goes from the 2 headed attachemt on the engine to the egr valve. I also stuck 2 bbs in the line that goes from the black box on top of the valve cover to that 2-headed port. Now that Ive deisabled the EGR, my trans is shifting harsher than before. 1-2 shift is especially hard now. Is this because I plugged the line from the black box on the valve cover to the 2 headed atachment out of which is the line to the EGR? I know the black box somehow controls shift harshness, so maybe it s seeing too much vacuum now or something. Should I have only blocked the line from the 2-headed port to the EGR valve, no others? Using the search tells to block the vacuum line going into the egr, but it seems that it would also be smart to block the other line that goes to that 2-headed fitting. Thanks, JMH |
All you should block is the line from the black box to the EGR itself. Put a BB in the line just before it connects to the EGR.

But my egr setup doesnt go directly from the black box to the egr valve. there is a little part with two male ends on it that is screwed into one of the manifolds, drectly to the right of the EGR valve, and the lines go from the black box to the one port on the manifold attachment, and then one tube from said attachment to the egr valve.

You just need to plug the line actually AT the valve itself. Anything before that doesn't really matter. You just don't want the valve opening. The stuff in between is probably just a thermoswitch that lets it operate only when the engine is hot. At least that's how my '84 model is. The plumbing to the tranny is totally separate, I'm not sure why your shifting was affected. Mine's fine. Make sure you didn't accidentally dislodge a different line while poking around in there...

Make a blockoff plate and forget about the BB. RT

The BB method will work to disable a healthy egr valve. But if the valve has a leaky seat you have to use the blockoff plate method.

Unclamp the metal flex-tube thingie from the EGR valve. Unbolt the two bolts holding the EGR on and remove it. There will be a thin gasket under the EGR valve. Get yourself some aluminum sheet stock, 1/16" is as thick as you'd need. You should be able to cut this with sharp tinsnips. Use the gasket as a template to make a blockoff plate. Obviously you don't cut out the hole in the center of the gasket...... Install gasket, install blockoff plate, install EGR valve. TaDa! Your done. If you made the blockoff plate the exact dimensions of the gasket it is very difficult to tell it is installed at all. RT |
