83 240D I can't downshift from 4 to 3, however I can shift from 3 to 4

I can shift from 3rd gear to 4th gear; however I cant downshift from 4th gear to 3rd gear when I need more power. When I make the downshift, i hear a funny sound and third gear doesnt engage. I tried adjusting the shift linkage, to no avail. I have heard that these transmissions are indestructible so is this one saveable or dead. I spent all summer underneath this car and I am starting to give up. This transmission may be the thing that makes me....

downshift question

On your 240, shall we ASSUME that you are speaking of a STANDARD TRANSMISSION?
We know that it is POSSIBLE to downshift an automatic.
Thanx,
spo out.

My first thought is a bad syncro. Can you shift into 3rd when you double clutch?

Carrameow 09-23-2003 12:02 AM

I will try that tomorrow, Kerry

I will try the famous double de-clutch tomorrow. Dont think i am being disrespectful or a wise guy, I love my 240D or I wouldnt have stuck by it so long............

down shifting

carrameow,

If you have a Haynes manual, you might want to look at the alignment of the actual shift levers on the transmission. (See the line drawing.) Measurements are given for proper setup. If they're out of adjustment, it might cause the downshift problem. Had mine wrong once and caused the first gear to pop out when creeping downhil slowly.

Give it a look.

Ben
